Briefs: Madrigal reservations due

Reservations are due today for the March 9 performance of the madrigal singers from Stevenson High School. The performers will sing, dance and act during two performances at noon and 6 p.m. at The Arboretum Club, 401 Half Day Road in Buffalo Grove. The event features a cappella singing, trumpeting, a string ensemble and juggling as well as Elizabethan costumes. Tickets for the meal and performance are $25 per adult (chicken entree), $18 per adult (vegetarian entree) and $12 per child under 12 years old (chicken nuggets entree). Reservation forms can be picked up at the school's fine arts division or choir office or by calling (847) 634-4000, ext. 1375.

Pay raise for manager

The Wheeling village board agreed this week to raise the pay of Village Manager Mark Rooney. Rooney, who was promoted to manager on Feb. 26, 2007, started with a base salary of $125,000. The board voted Tuesday to raise his base salary 12 percent to $140,000. The increase will be retroactive to Nov. 1, 2007.

Teens win Honeywell prize

Five Northwest suburban high school students have won scholarships to the Honeywell Scholars @ Presidential Classroom program, held March 2-8 in Washington, D.C. They will join students from around the globe learning about the interconnection between science, technology and public policy and meeting with elected officials, business leaders and government appointees to discuss current issues of global concern. Honeywell awards the scholarships after a rigorous application and review process based on academic achievement and community involvement. Winners are: Matthew Bauer, of Schaumburg, a senior at Schaumburg High School; Matthew Farrenkopf of Buffalo Grove, a senior at Stevenson High School; Bryan Lee of Schaumburg, a senior at Conant High School; Adam Mastrangeli of Bartlett, a senior at Bartlett High School and Marietta Smith of Mount Prospect, a senior at Prospect High School.

Jungle insights at library

Roger Kuhns will perform a 90-minute monologue called Jungle Gold at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Barrington Area Library, 505 N. Northwest Hwy., Barrington. The humorous monologue is about Kuhns' experience in a South American jungle where he worked as a geologist trying to find gold and other precious minerals. Kuhns' performance is filled with comic and serious insights about the struggle to protect fragile rainforests versus with the need to mine metals. Register online at www.barrington arealibrary.org.

Final exams rescheduled

Due to a snow day being declared Feb. 1, final exams at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire have been rescheduled. The end-of-the-term tests now will be administered June 3 to 5.
