Briefs: Hanson jury to deliberate

After weeks of testimony, a DuPage County jury is expected to begin its deliberations late this afternoon in the quadruple murder trial of Eric C. Hanson of Naperville. Hanson, 31, is accused of murdering his parents, sister and brother-in-law in September in Aurora and Naperville after his credit card scheme in his parents' name unraveled. Hanson maintains his innocence. Deliberations will begin after lawyers finish their closing arguments.

Dad's bond stands

The Glendale Heights father accused of setting ablaze his two sons, one of whom later died, will remain held on a $10 million cash bond, prosecutors said Tuesday. Kaushik Patel, 34, was expected to appear Tuesday before a DuPage judge for a full bond hearing. Prosecutors, though, said they were satisfied with the bond imposed Friday, shortly after Patel arrived at the jail to face murder charges. He is accused of intentionally dousing his sons with gasoline on Nov. 18. One of the boys, Om, 4, died Jan. 17 at the hospital. His brother, Vishv, 7, still is hospitalized with severe burns.

Man gets 12-year plea

A former Lombard man was sentenced Tuesday to 12 years in prison for molesting a 5-year-old girl left in his care. LaShaun Dean, 32, pleaded guilty to predatory criminal sexual assault charges for molesting the child last year in Lombard. He did not have a prior criminal history. DuPage Circuit Judge Kathryn Creswell approved the plea deal.

No danger at Kennedy

Kennedy Junior High in Lisle received a report that a student wrote a message on a MySpace Web page that he or she was thinking about bombing the school, according to a Talk203 message from the school Tuesday. Police were contacted immediately and it was determined students were not in danger. Principal Don Perry is asking parents to remind their children such threats are taken seriously and can result in severe disciplinary action.

Red-light cameras coming

Naperville will begin the operation of red-light enforcement cameras on March 1. The cameras are located at Fort Hill Drive and Aurora Avenue and 95th Street and Book Road. Signs are posted at both intersections indicating they are red-light photo-enforced. Naperville police will issue warning citations throughout March. Beginning April 1, red-light violation citations will be issued.

Author's visit canceled

The village of Carol Stream has canceled a Wednesday evening book discussion by Chicago author and journalist Rick Kogan. The event had been scheduled on the same day as a planned memorial service for Gayle Dubowski, a Carol Stream resident who was one of the victims of last week's shootings at Northern Illinois University. The services will be held at Glenbard North High School, 990 Kuhn Road, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the school's auditorium.
