District 93 wants input
Carol Stream Elementary District 93 is seeking input from parents, community members and staff to update its strategic plan. The district serves portions of Carol Stream, Bloomingdale, and Hanover Park. A survey has been developed based on a review of the challenges and needs facing the district in the next five years. The deadline for participating is March 5. A copy of the survey is included in the district's most recent Community Connections newsletter. The survey also can be filled out at www.ccsd93.com. Anyone who doesn't have Internet access may visit any District 93 school to access the online survey. Completed surveys also can be returned by mail.
Mingle with businesses
Innovative Orthodontic Centers, Naperville Dental Specialists and Refine 360 will be co-hosting "It's All About Me," a ladies-only event from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Main Street Promenade, 55 South Main St., Naperville. The event will be an evening of mingling and fun with downtown businesses offering appetizers, drinks, shopping and beauty secrets with special offers and giveaways. Admission is free.
Film festival fundraiser
Movie buffs can mingle with industry professionals at the Naperville Independent Film Festival's first Red Carpet Event from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 25 at Jilly's, 103 S. Main St., Naperville. Dan Decker, a nationally recognized authority in storytelling and screenwriting, will be there. Glenna Morris and the Lee Bailey Band will entertain. Tickets are $25 in advance and $35 at the door. The film festival will take place Sept. 24-27. A meeting for people who would like to volunteer to help with the festival will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Naperville Racquet and Tennis Club, 1011 E. Jazz at North Central
Two student jazz ensembles from North Central College's Jazz Studies department will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Heininger Auditorium at Larrance Academic Center, 309 E. School St., Naperville. The program is free. For details, call (630) 416-3911.
Scholarships available
The Friends of Volo Bog is offering two scholarships for $1,000 each to outstanding students interested in pursuing environmental careers. Applications can be found at www.friendsofvolobog.org and must be postmarked no later than Feb. 29. Applicants must live in Lake, McHenry, Kane, Cook, DuPage, Kendall or Will County, attend a high school in one of these counties, have a minimum B average for the first three years, and plan to attend an accredited college or university. The applicant should be planning to enter a career directly related to preserving the environment. To be eligible for the continuing college scholarship applicants must have graduated from a high school from one of these counties with a minimum B average; currently hold a minimum B average in their college studies; and should be on a course study leading to a career directly related to preserving the environment.
Essayists receive laptops
Third-graders from around the suburbs received laptop computers Sunday for winning essays answering the question, "How can a laptop change your community and change your world?" The following suburban students were among the 33 Illinois third-graders who won the contest: Tyler Bentsen of Central Elementary School in Lake Bluff, Jared Garner of Gurnee Grade School in Gurnee; Grant Haen of Schiesher Elementary School in Lisle; Adrian Holubek of Indian Grove Elementary School in Mount Prospect and Grace Keller of Liberty Elementary School in Carpentersville. Lt. Governor Pat Quinn announced the winners of the statewide essay contest Sunday. The XO laptop is a compact, durable, energy-efficient machine created especially for children living in the most remote environments.
