Briefs: Times for Geo-Karis wake and funeral

Former state Sen. Adeline Geo-Karis' wake is today, 4 to 9 p.m., at Illinois Beach Resort and Conference Center, which is at a park bearing her name. The wake will be in the Illinois Ballroom. Visitation is 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday. Her Greek Orthodox funeral follows at 10 a.m. in the facility's Grand Vista Ballroom overlooking Lake Michigan. A luncheon is scheduled immediately after the funeral. Anyone who wishes to speak publicly about Geo-Karis may do so at the luncheon. Louis Atsaves, an attorney and Geo-Karis' campaign manager, said the Greek Orthodox religion permits only clergy to deliver a eulogy at a funeral. The state resort is near Zion where Wadsworth Road ends east of Route 41.

Speed limit to stay at 20

Round Lake Heights plans to keep its speed limit at the established speed of 20 mph on specific village streets. The village board took action to keep the set speed limit following a traffic study of village streets. Mayor Terrance Lumpkins said the village paid $9,100 to conduct the study because some residents urged the village to raise the speed limit. Lumpkins said it is important to keep the speed limit low to keep children safe. He praised the board for doing the right thing.

Volunteers honored

Residents and organizations in the 10th Congressional District, including representatives from Indian Creek and Libertyville, will be honored Saturday at the first International Volunteer Fair in Glenview. Those winning 10 for the 10th awards from U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk include COVE Alliance of Indian Creek for working with children in Uganda and the International Sharing Ministry in Libertyville for working for children in Tanzania. The event is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Glenview Park Center, 2400 Chestnut Ave., and is open to the public. Call (847) 940-0202.

Student wins contest

Sara Hewitt, a senior at Lake Zurich High School, won third place in the Chicago Dental Society's annual High School Journalism Contest for her article titled "Dental Dangers: How Can You Prevent Serious Health Risks?" The article on hidden sugars in popular foods and beverages was published in the October 2007 issue of the high school newspaper, Bear Facts. It earned her a $250 check for the journalism program at the high school. The Chicago Dental Society sponsors the contest annually to encourage young people to write about oral health issues, such as the effects of sugar and snacking on their oral health. The society represents approximately 4,200 dentists in Lake, Cook and DuPage counties.

Old cars sought for film

The makers of the upcoming Universal movie "Public Enemies" starring Johnny Depp are appealing to the public for help finding antique cars, trucks and buses from 1930 to 1935 to use during filming. Owners of such vehicles interested in allowing their use in the movie should bring photos only to the Hyatt Regency Woodfield at 1800 E. Golf Road in Schaumburg between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Feb. 23. High school art on display

Barrington High School fourth annual student teapot show, which highlights artwork from students at many area high schools, is scheduled to open Tuesday and run through March 6 in the school's Clair E. Smith Art Gallery, 616 W. Main St. The show, called Tea for 3D, will feature the work of students from Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Grant High, Libertyville, Palatine, Schaumburg, St. Charles and Wauconda. An artists' reception is scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. March 6 in the gallery. The gallery is open between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on school days and during evening performances.
