Have a little fun with some rhyme for no reason
There once was a columnist around Naperville
Who imagined a timely paper thrill
To use up her space
To wrap up the race
With poems about the primary caper chill.
Another Limerick
There's also the same Naperville resident
Who found she was very hesitant
To tell you the truth
At the voting booth
She opted not to vote for President.
A sonnet
In the heart of the winter season
From limericks to haiku
There's little rhyme nor reason
Why I'm writing poems for you.
We'll still celebrate Washington and Lincoln
On President's Day next Monday
And I'm wondering what we'll all be thinkin'
'Bout this historical week one day.
You gotta look way back to tell the story
About how America withstands her glory.
Haiku
Dining out these days?
Tip two dollars on ten for
Good service and smiles.
Lyric Poem One
Want a heart-shaped pizza?
Braconi's will roll one out
With everything you want on it.
-- Everything without a doubt!
Lyric Poem Two
Vote! Vote! Vote!
Was the cry six weeks early this year.
Would more time have made a difference?
That's the thought I wish were clear.
Lyric Poem Three
If you ran in last week's primary election
Follow the hopeful with the slogan that rhymes.
The first round of the campaign season is finished,
So take down all your $%!&*#! signs!
Lyric Poem Four
A month before St. Patrick's Parade
The West Suburban Irish will host
Their annual Emerald Dinner
This Saturday, complete with Irish toast.
There'll be Irish dancers and live music,
Chuck Corrigan says, and bagpipers, too,
At the Arrowhead Golf Club in Wheaton
With a choice of corned beef, but no Irish stew.
Lyric Poem Five
Julie Corwith e-mailed an idea
Because of potholes in the street
To promote a competition with Chicago
In which Naperville could compete.
Cinquain
Potholes
Cracks, craters
Freezing, thawing, enlarging
Potholes create hazardous driving
Beware!
Free Verse
Though some folks say
They don't like poetry,
A tiny three-word poem
Rhymes with "We not me."
In seven letters, it brands
An unselfish message
For everyone to consider.
Another Lyric Poem
Hearts for Heroes took off
Where Amy Berger lives.
She'll reach her goal of 140,000
If every resident gives.
Address valentines to "My Hero"
And drop off at city hall.
Hand-made or store-bought,
Amy will send them all.
Seven-Line Poem
Family
Valentine's Day
Time to remember
Anniversaries, birthdays and sweethearts
Celebrating every special Valentine's Day
More focused on women than men
And criticized by pundits for "expected generosity."
Final Verse
Writing verses is fun
For every wannabe poet.
You've got until Thursday.
Sweeties, don't blow it!
