Latest storm makes a mess of the suburbs
The powerful winter storm that blew through the Chicago area Wednesday grounded thousands of airline passengers, snarled traffic and closed suburban schools and malls.
About 1,000 flights were canceled at O'Hare International Airport, and delays for flights that did take off averaged 45 minutes. At Midway, delays averaged two hours, and more than 100 flights were canceled.
Roads were slippery, visibility poor and the afternoon commute nasty.
The Illinois Department of Transportation deployed 700 trucks to fight the wind-driven snow in northern Illinois.
