'Gathering of Eagles' to honor top Scouts

More than 350 Scouts from the Three Fires Council, Boy Scouts of America achieved Scouting's highest honor in 2007 -- Eagle Scout.

The Eagle Banquet Committee has been hard at work preparing for the upcoming "Gathering of Eagles" ceremony to begin with a reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner and program at 7 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Wyndham Hotel, 3000 Warrenville Road, Lisle. The Three Fires Council serves Kane, DuPage, Kendall, DeKalb, and parts of Will and Cook counties.

This year's Eagle Scout recipients achieved all six requirements ranging from: being active in their troop or crew after achieving life Scout rank; provided written recommendations from others that they demonstrate living by the Scout Oath and Scout Law daily; earned a minimum of 21 merit badges; served in a position of responsibility for six months; planned, developed and provided leadership to a community project, and stated their ambitions and life purpose. DuPage County treasurer Gwen Henry is the 2007 Class Honorary.

"It's undoubtedly the proudest moment of a young Scout's life. It's a wonderful gift to our communities and remarkable testimony to the strength and quality of Scouting across the counties that the Three Fires Council, BSA serves," said Jerry Bevignani, program committee chairman for the Gathering of Eagles Ceremony.

2007 set an all-time record nationally for the highest number of young Scouts that achieved Eagle Scout, with a total of 51,742 new Eagles added to the roster.

Bill Steele, National Eagle Scout Association Director, is leading the charge to reconnect with Eagle Scouts through a new publication called "Roll Call: The National Eagle Scout Registry." Only Eagle Scouts who agree to be listed and who are adults will be included in the directory.
