Briefs: Elgin prepared for storm
Like many area towns feeling the pinch of limited salt supplies, Elgin officials said Tuesday they were conserving salt by mixing it with sand. "We've only used salt when conditions absolutely warrant it," said John Loete, Elgin public works director, who noted the city normally uses 6,500 tons of salt but this winter has consumed 13,000 tons. Elgin has established 17 snow removal routes each totaling 55 miles. All 34 plows were staffed throughout Tuesday night and this morning, city officials said.

Dist. 300 trims bank costs
The Community Unit District 300 school board has taken its first look at a proposal that would consolidate the district's banking with the goal of reducing bank-related expenses. District 300 currently has numerous accounts at five different banks. The district is soliciting proposals from banks to reduce the number of accounts, decrease bank fees, increase the interest collected and decrease staff time spent managing the accounts. District finance officials plan to recommend a vendor for banking services by April 14.
