Get horse sense at ownership workshop

A one-day workshop "Horse Sense 101: Basics of Horse Ownership" is designed to help you make wise decisions prior to purchasing a horse or help you care for a horse you already own.

The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hooved Animal Humane Society, 10804 McConnell Road, Woodstock.

• Horse Ownership: What it takes to own a horse, benefits and responsibilities.

• Caring for Your Horse: Just the basics on nutrition, management and physical conditioning for a healthy horse.

• Finding Help: Choosing a boarding facility, trainer/ instructor, farrier, veterinarian, etc.

• Bringing a Horse Home: What you need to know to establish your own facility and pasture.

• Finding the Right Horse: Horse behavior and nature. How to select and purchase a horse.

• What I Wish I Had Known Before I Bought My Horse: a panel of horse owners will share their experiences

Speakers include Dr. Kevin Kline, extension equine specialist; Debra Hagstrom, extension equine specialist; Ellen Phillips, an extension educator from University of Illinois Extension; and Dr. Patti Klein-Manke, director of HAHS.

The workshop is co-sponsored by the University of Illinois Extension, www.extension.uiuc.edu; and the Hooved Animal Humane Society, www.hahs.org.

Cost of the all-day workshop, including lunch is $30 per person, $50 for two people from the same household/stable, and $15 for each child under 18 years of age.
