Jacobs' 25-0 start leaves D-C in the dust

Rarely are games decided in the first quarter.

This one was.

Outscoring Dundee-Crown 22-0 during the first 8 minutes and tallying the first 25 points of the game, Jacobs was able to pummel the Chargers 56-26 in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls basketball game in Algonquin Tuesday night.

"We stressed defensive ball pressure and we wanted to start the game in attack mode," said Ed Haugens. "Our teamwork was excellent and we really flowed and meshed together. We were very patient on offense and got good shots."

During the decisive first quarter, Jacobs (12-9, 3-2) converted 10 of 14 shots from the field for 71 percent. Of the 10 baskets, 7 were layups coming off 6 Dundee-Crown turnovers.

Markie Rahn, who was 4 of 5 from the field, led Jacobs with 9 first-quarter points. Keri Bultman and Maria Tamburrino scored 4 each for the Golden Eagles.

The Chargers (10-11, 3-2), who committed 11 turnovers in the first quarter, were 0 of 14 from the field and 0 of 6 from 3-point range.

Jacobs scored the first 3 points of the second quarter on a 3-pointer by Rahn to complete a 25-0 run to start the game.

The Chargers, who misfired on their first 20 shots of the game, finally scored when Robyn Staudenmaier made a putback to make the score 25-2 with 5:16 left before halftime.

"I don't think we could have played any worse," said D-C coach Joe Komaromy. "Jacobs came out very energized and we weren't ready to play. We have five seniors who are pretty resilient. I am sure they will come back strong."

Leading 30-10 at halftime, the Golden Eagles ensured there wouldn't be a miraculous Dundee-Crown comeback by scoring the first 7 points of the third quarter.

Rahn had a pair of baskets as the Golden Eagles opened up a 37-10 lead with 5:18 left in the third quarter.

"We emphasized at halftime that we can't let up," said Haugens. "D-C is one of the top teams in the division and they won't give up. I was happy to see us come out strong in the third quarter."

Jacobs' biggest lead of the game was 52-20 after a layup by Katy Cook with 3:48 remaining.

Rahn led Jacobs with 17 points.

"We didn't play well at McHenry last Friday and we came out with a chip on our shoulder tonight," said Rahn. "We came out strong defensively and we were very energized. We have been stressing defense in practice. We know D-C is a very good team and that we had to play hard the whole game."

Jacobs, which made 24 of 40 from the floor for 60 percent, committed only 11 turnovers.

Dundee-Crown, which converted only 9 of 49 shots from the floor for 18 percent, turned the ball over 33 times. Staudenmaier was the lone bright spot for the Chargers, scoring 19 points with 8 rebounds and 5 blocked shots.
