Fire district tax hike clearly needed
This week signs have begun popping up in a small handful of yards around Winfield, claiming that the Winfield Fire Protection District's long-hoped-for referendum is a case of taxation without representation. I'm not sure how they can claim this is the case.
After all, if anyone calls 911 in the district -- resident or not, taxpayer or not, supporter or critic -- we come.
Rich or poor.
Day or night.
Rain or snow.
Illness or injury or fire or flood.
It seems to me that we represent everyone … and then some.
On the other hand, it's the naysayers who appear to represent no one … except their own personal interests.
They could be battling important political and social injustices, but instead have chosen to hurt a hard-working fire district that's been doing a 2007 job with a 1987 tax rate.
