Scholarships

Math camp scholarship: The Zonta Club of St. Charles-Geneva-Batavia is offering a scholarship to enable girls who complete the sixth grade in June 2008 to explore the world of mathematics and its importance in many career fields.

Tuition covers the one-week session, which will be July 20-25 on the campus of Western Illinois University in Macomb.

Titled "Girl's Plus Math Camp," this annual program offers girls the opportunity to learn from professionals about how math impacts their various career fields.

By helping girls to understand the many applications of math in the work world, the program seeks to promote a greater interest in its study and appreciation of its importance as a life skill. Girls also are given opportunities to work on networking and leadership skills.

Girls completing the sixth grade this spring in any public or private school within the district area of Elgin Area School District U-46, Central Unit District 301, Kaneland Unit District 302, St. Charles Unit District 303, Geneva Unit District 304, or Batavia Unit District 101 are eligible.

Selection will be based on a strong interest in math and letters of recommendation from teachers or guidance counselors. Gifted status or minimum qualifying scores on standardized tests are not a criteria. Transportation to the camp is the responsibility of the recipient; no health or accident insurance is included.

A portion of the proceeds from the Zonta Club's annual silent auction, held the last Wednesday of October, is used to support these scholarship opportunities for local women. Local charities also benefit.

The Zonta silent auction has received support from local businesses and the community in recognition of the club's efforts to improve the lives of women both locally and internationally.

Applications for scholarships must be submitted no later than Feb. 25. Awards are made in April for the July 2008 program. Applications are available online at www.zonta-stcharles-geneva-batavia.org.
