Bartlett High
• On Saturday, in preparation for their Disney World performance on March 26, the Bartlett High School Band will hold a bowling fundraising event. "Fill the House for the Mouse" will begin at 7:45 p.m. at Brunswick Bowl, 1100 W. Lake St. in Roselle. All donations and proceeds will help to offset the student cost of the trip. Streamwood High
• On Sunday, Streamwood High School student artwork will be unveiled during an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hanover Park Park District gallery, 1919 Walnut Ave. In addition to numerous art pieces, two Upstate 8 Art Show award-winning items will be displayed: Faith Betinis, fourth place in the painting category; and Becca Humann, honorable mention in the photography category.
Laurel Hill
• On Tuesday, Crossroads After School Kid's Club will meet from 2 to 2:30 p.m. in Laurel Hill Elementary School gym, 1750 Laurel Ave., Hanover Park.
• On Friday, a Spanish Parenting class will be held at 10 a.m. at the school. A representative from Hanover Township will present a class on preparing children for success in school, encouraging positive behavior, reinforcing children's academic skills and helping them with homework. The classes are free and will be taught in Spanish. Babysitting will be provided.
• On Saturday, the annual "Wedding Dress & Evening Gown Fundraiser" will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school, 1750 Laurel Ave., Hanover Park. Wedding dresses are priced at $50 each and prom, bridesmaid and evening gowns at $10 each. There will be more than 1,000 new gowns on sale. For details, call (630) 213-5580. Proceeds go to the PTLH parent group at Laurel Hill School and Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Lowrie
• The Parent Book Club will meet with staff members from 7 to 8 p.m. today to discuss the book "7 Keys to Comprehension" at Lowrie Elementary School, 264 Oak St. in Elgin.
Nature Ridge
• On Friday at 1 p.m., NBC Channel 5 Weather Reporter Ginger Zee will visit the second-grade classrooms at Nature Ridge Elementary School in Bartlett.
Washington
• On Thursday at 9:30 a.m., fourth- to sixth-grade students will participate in the school spelling bee in the gym at Washington Elementary School in Elgin.
Wayne
• On Thursday, an interactive parent workshop, "Reading is Thinking," will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Wayne Elementary School, 5N443 School St. Parents will learn reading strategies to help their children with comprehension.
In other news
• Abbott Middle School in Elgin has officially become part of the Illinois PTA and National PTA.
• The student council at Kimball Middle School in Elgin organized a food drive and collected over 1,800 cans for the Community Crisis Center in Elgin.
• This year, fourth-grade students from Jill Neis' and Sara Szydlowski's classes at Timber Trails Elementary School in Hoffman Estates held a food and clothing drive that generated everything from new clothes, to household items, to food products and gift cards. In addition, the staff adopted a family of five who had a holiday wish list and they were able to get them everything they needed. One class adopted a family of two and was able to raise enough money to help make their wish list come true.
• A business partnership between First Community Bank and U-46 sponsors the Community of Readers annual book drive, which continues through Feb. 2. Donors are asked to bring gently used or new preschool and grade-school level reading materials to a First Community Bank location in Elgin at either 165 S. Randall Road or 50 Tyler Creek Plaza. Volunteers from the local high schools and various community organizations then sort the books and distribute them to families who may not have the means to provide home reading materials. Since the program started, more than 30,000 children's books have been placed in student households.
