Maine W. wins; Cougars rebound

Maine West's girls basketball team ran its record to 3-0 in 2008 with a 50-35 victory over Lyons Township Saturday night.

The Warriors (15-5 overall) also improved to 2-0 in the Sweet 16 tourney, which will conclude Jan. 26 at Lake Zurich High School when all 16 teams will play two games.

Maine West was led Saturday by senior forward Brittany Begrowicz, who scored a game-high 18 points with 8 rebounds. Begrowicz also paced the Warriors earlier in the week with 18 points against New Trier and 19 against Glenbrook North.

"Brittany is starting to get healthier with each game," said Warriors coach Derril Kipp, whose two-time all-area forward underwent knee surgery last July.

Mary Kusner added 12 points with 4 rebound while Erin Baumstark collected 9 points (three 3-pointers) with 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

Colleen Vana added 5 points and 4 assists for West, which will resume action Friday at Deerfield to start a string of four game in five days.

Kipp hopes to have starting sophomore guard Samantha Acosta back from a broken hand for Monday's game against Hillcrest at the McDonald's Shootout at Willowbrook High School.

Conant 57, Deerfield 30: Conant (16-4) bounced back from an emotional 37-30 loss to Schaumburg Friday night with authority in Deerfield.

Senior Michelle Rawleigh led the Cougars with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Ariana Zades added 11 and Lisa Parisi collected 9 with 3 steals.

"We came our with a purpose after the Schaumburg game," said Cougars coach Dan Travers. "I give the girls a lot of credit. They wanted to prove they could play back to back games."

Noreen Davis added 7 points for the Cougars while teammate Danielle Ladehoff had 6 and 2 steals. Emma Loos handed out a team-high 4 assists with 3 steals and a bucket.

Sandburg 36, Barrington 32: Junior Jenny Schnack, sophomore Emily Harris and freshman Sarah Mass were top scorers for Barrington (4-17) with 6 points apiece.

Marian Catholic 60, Barrington 42: Senior Jenny Muench and sophomore Susan Hohenadel both scored 10 points and Kelly Hendricks added 7 for the Lions (9-12, 2-5) in the East Suburban Catholic Conference game.

Hinsdale Central 43, Palatine 24: Palatine stands at 7-15 following its Sweet Sixteen loss in Hinsdale in the Sweet 16.
