Guilty in 2002 shooting
An Aurora man has been found guilty of shooting a man who is now paralyzed as a result of his wounds, authorities said. Ernesto C. Urzua, 25, of the 100 block of South Fourth Street, was convicted by a jury Tuesday of attempted first-degree murder in the March 1, 2002, shooting on the 700 block of Columbia Street. Prosecutors said Urzua opened fire on a 20-year-old man who was walking with his 2-year-old daughter. The victim was hit four times and is paralyzed from the chest down. The child was not injured. Urzua faces up to life in prison. A co-defendant, Andres Ramirez, 33, also of Aurora, faces similar offenses and is awaiting trial.

Warrenville backs Fermilab
Warrenville aldermen this week passed a resolution supporting Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, which employs 70 city residents. It was announced late last year potential budget cuts would impact Fermilab's future. The federal budget, which is expected to pass later this week, eliminates $90 million in funding for high-energy physics. Fermilab officials said they will have to lay off about 200 employees to meet the approved budget guidelines. The resolution also requests that Congress provide a supplemental appropriation that would allow Fermilab to continue its work and prevent massive layoffs. This week's action was the result of a cooperative effort between Mayor David Brummel, Aurora Mayor Thomas Weisner and Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke.
