Goudy puts up gaudy numbers
Wheaton Warrenville South came to Wheaton North ready for its rival, so the home team needed a special effort to win.
Madison Goudy provided it.
The junior guard buried seven 3-pointers in scoring a career-high 21 points for the Falcons, who stayed unbeaten in the DuPage Valley Conference with a 42-34 girls basketball victory Wednesday night in Wheaton.
"Once I hit one, it just kind of kept going," Goudy said with a smile.
"What an unbelievable game," Wheaton North coach David Eaton said. "She just came out on fire. She really got us through that game. We needed somebody to step up big there and, boy, did she ever."
Goudy made five 3-pointers in the first half, including one just before the buzzer to send Wheaton North (12-4, 6-0) into intermission with its first lead at 22-21.
WW South (11-7, 4-2) hung with the DVC leader for most of the game and held a 29-28 edge with seven minutes remaining.
However, the Falcons responded with a 12-2 run to pull out to their biggest advantage at 40-31. Goudy canned her final 3-pointer in the spree, while Michelle Scandora contributed a pair of inside buckets and Allie Cerone capped it with her second 3-pointer.
Wheaton North totaled 10 3-pointers to win a game in which it didn't shoot a free throw.
Sarah Langlas led WW South with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Tigers coach Rob Kroehnke was pleased with his team's 1-3-1 zone defense, which collapsed on Scandora inside and limited the senior to 9 points.
"Hey, you give up 40 points to Wheaton North and you've got a chance," Kroehnke said. "We just got to find a way to finish a little bit better. I thought we had a great first half shooting and taking care of the ball."
"They really doubled down on Scandora," Eaton said. "I thought they tried to take her out of the game. They did a pretty good job of that."
But that left the perimeter open just enough for Goudy to have a big night in the flow of the offense.
"It's pick your poison," Kroehnke said. "I've always been a believer, you know, give them a 3 instead of letting them jam it inside."
Goudy shot 7 for 10 beyond the arc.
"It feels awesome to beat South," she said.
