Briefs: Des Plaines couple robbed

Des Plaines police said two men broke into an elderly couple's home on New Year's Day, stealing the husband's gold wedding band off a table.

One of the men initially knocked on the front door, but the 88-year-old woman refused to open it, even after the man told her he wanted to trim the trees but needed to check her home phone, police said.

The second man then forced open the rear door of the home on the 2500 block of Scott Street, while the first man tried to convince the woman to open the front door, police said.

Her disabled 83-year-old husband was in the living room, police said. The men rifled through the couple's belongings, taking the man's wedding band from a table.

The woman ran to a neighbor's home and the neighbor called 911, reports said. The men, who weren't armed, left before officers arrived, police said. Police have no suspects.
