Briefs: Palatine condos planned
New condos and businesses could soon be coming to Palatine, across the street from Harper College. The Palatine Village Council will hear plans Monday for a four-story, mixed-use building on 2.3 acres at 1776 S. Roselle Road, the old Embers restaurant site. A building with 51 condominiums and 20,000 square feet of commercial space is being proposed by Lee and Eugenia Archos of Harvard. The idea was given preliminary approval Dec. 18 by the Palatine plan commission in a 6-3 vote. Commissioner Ben Applegate has recommended that 20 percent of the condos be set aside as affordable housing.
Teen driving program
The Wheeling Police Department, along with the Wheeling High School driver education department and the school's Students Against Drunk Drivers chapter, will offer a Parent-Teen Driver Summit at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the council chambers of Wheeling village hall, 225 W. Dundee Road. Topics will include new state rules for teen drivers, such as new curfew rules and passenger restrictions, and seat belt requirements for teens. The discussion will also have information about common teen driving mistakes, common causes of teen crashes and insurance requirements. To reserve a spot, call Sgt. Peter Panagakis at (847) 459-2649.
Spectrum has teen concert
A concert for teens will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. today at the Spectrum Teen Center in Schaumburg Township Hall at 1 Illinois Blvd. in Hoffman Estates. Four local metal and alternative rock bands will perform: Epyrean Sanctum, Inner Scrape, Fatal Escape and Under the Breath. The cost is $3 at the door. The concert is sponsored by Spectrum Youth and Family Services of Schaumburg Township and the Vogelei Teen Center. Call (847) 884-6212.
Homebuyers workshop
Hanover Township will put on a homebuyers workshop at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the township offices, 240 S. Route 59 in Bartlett. Topics will include what to consider when selling or buying a home, financing options and how to use tax exemptions to lower a mortgage payment. Call the clerk's office, (630) 837-0301.
Candidate forum planned
The League of Women Voters from the Arlington Heights and the Palatine Areas will host a candidate forum at 10 a.m. Jan. 12 in the Hendrickson Room of the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, 500 N. Dunton Ave., featuring candidates for state House District 66 and the 10th Congressional District. In the 66th, where Carolyn Krause is retiring, Republicans Laura Bartell and Christine Prochno are running against each other for state representative. In the 10th Congressional District, Jay Footlik and Dan Seals are competing for the Democratic nomination; the winner will face Mark Kirk in November. Footlik and Seals also will appear at a league forum 7 p.m. Thursday at New Trier High School, Northfield campus, 7 Happ Road, Building C, Room 234. The primary is Feb. 5; early voting begins Jan. 14.
