Briefs: Cab driver assaulted

A 44-year-old Bartlett man has been charged with misdemeanor battery and resisting arrest after he punched a cab driver in the early morning hours of Dec. 29, police said. Thomas Glessner was picked up in Hoffman Estates by a cab and driven to his Bartlett home at 745 Cove Court. Bartlett police said Glessner refused to pay the bill, punched the cab driver and fled the area. Police located Glessner shortly after 1:30 a.m. at his home, where authorities say he fought with officers attempting to arrest him. Glessner is to appear Jan. 23 at the DuPage County courthouse in Wheaton.

Party benefits hospital

Cherie Smith Zurek, a Lake Zurich RE/MAX agent, and her husband Mark Zurek, owner of Delta Renovations in Barrington, made an unusual request on their holiday party invitation to friends, family members and business associates -- fork out dough for a good cause. The couple matched donations dollar for dollar, raising $9,450 for Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Roughly 200 guests attended the Dec. 15 party. "We were overwhelmed by the generosity of our guests," said Smith Zurek. The 4,000 RE/MAX associates in northern Illinois have supported Children's Memorial Hospital through a variety of fundraisers.
