Grant, Mundelein, Libertyville all cruise
It wasn't as close as the final score indicated.
While Grant's girls basketball team still won by double digits over Prairie Ridge in the teams' opening-round game in Mundelein's Christmas tournament, the Bulldogs enjoyed a 21-point lead in the fourth quarter.
Grant won 51-40. With the Bulldogs' starters on the bench, Prairie Ridge scored the game's final 10 points.
Jamie Swanson paced Grant (10-2) with 16 points. Tori Ziegler and Autumn Gaylor added 13 and 12, respectively, while Heather Ruetsche contributed 8.
Shannon Hennelly had 11 points for the Wolves.
Mundelein 74, Streamwood 39: J.J. Sawchuk scored a season-high 18 points, as the Mustangs had no problems in their opening game of their own tournament.
Mundelein (10-3) also received double-digit points from Kelsey Weyers (13), Jessica Bjerning (11) and Kelsey O'Connor (10). Toni Knar had 9 in the win.
Libertyville 51, Prosser 19: At Mundelein, Casey Hopper had 17 points for the Wildcats, who snapped a three-game losing streak.
Libertyville (7-7) also got 7 points from Erin Waehner and 6 apiece from Maka Stewart and Megan White.
Waukegan 45, Payton 44: At Mundelein, Sarah Angelos had 13 points for the Bulldogs, who trailed 33-27 after three quarters.
Payton was led by Kathleen Molloy's 16 points.
RM 51, Zion-Benton 49: At Mundelein, Alexa Bennett scored 29 points, including six 3-pointers, for Rolling Meadows.
Brittany Simmons had 19 points for Zion-Benton, Abby Hanson added 14, and Dominikque Williams chipped in 11.
Huntley 44, Vernon Hills 30: In the first game of the day at Mundelein, the Red Raiders received 13 points from Katie Bergquist and 12 from Shannon Callahan.
Amy Burton had 6 points for Vernon Hills (5-8). Brianna Skeens totaled 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.
Deerfield 57, Grayslake C. 51: At Warren, Dani Ripkey scored 28 points, including four 3-pointers, for the Warriors.
Deerfield also received 10 points from Liz Heitzinger and 9 from Maria Crist.
Alison Metzger scored 15 points for Grayslake Central (3-8, 0-2) on five 3-pointers.
Megan LeBaron added 10 for the Rams.
Palatine 45, Niles North 30: At Warren, Lauren Orris had 12 points and 8 rebounds for the Pirates, who led 18-6 after one quarter. Kate MacFabe added 6 points and 11 boards.
Niles North was led by Breannah Ranger's 12 points and 15 rebounds.
