Woman to teach deaf in Kenya

In September, Arlington Heights resident Megan Blair DaPisa departed for Kenya to begin pre-service training as a deaf education Peace Corps volunteer. This month, she'll graduate from training and begin educating deaf students in a school and community setting.

DaPisa, the daughter of Bob and Terry DaPisa of Arlington Heights, is a graduate of Rolling Meadows High School. She earned a bachelor's degree in special education from Minnesota State University at Moorehead in 2007.

• John Kilma, franchisee of the Merlin 200,000 Miles Shop in Prospect Heights, completed a tire pressure monitor systems course at the Merlin Training Center in Geneva. The course prepared Kilma with the basic knowledge and skills required to work with tire pressure monitor systems.

Additionally, Mike Parker, an employee of the Merlin 200,000 Miles Shop in Elk Grove Village, completed a catalytic converter course at the training center. The course gave Parker a foundation of the theory, diagnostic skills and replacement of catalytic converters.

• Ice cream chef Jim Capannari of Capannari Ice Cream in Mount Prospect was honored with a blue ribbon for his vanilla ice cream during the National Ice Cream Retailers Association annual convention in Texas.

Dr. John MacGregor, head of Clemson University's dairy department bestowed the award.

Capannari's vanilla ice cream was analyzed and judged on 35 different characteristics, ranging from texture and body to color and taste.

• The Children's Advocacy Center of North and Northwest Cook County, Hoffman Estates, elected Tracy Tucker of Palatine and Dr. Ron Dachman of Schaumburg to its board of directors.

Tucker, a graduate of the University of Illinois, received a master of arts degree from the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago. She is currently in private practice, providing individual and group therapy services to adults and adolescents.

Dachman, a graduate of the University of Illinois, received a Ph.D. from Western Michigan University and completed an internship at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Md. He is the founder of Behavioral Psychology Associates in Schaumburg.

The Children's Advocacy Center of North and Northwest Cook County provides support services to reduce the trauma experienced by child victims of sexual abuse and severe physical abuse.

• Buffalo Grove resident Lynne Schneider, executive director of the Buffalo Grove Area Chamber of Commerce, was named an Accredited Chamber Executive by the Illinois Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives during its annual conference in Springfield.

Schneider, who has worked for the Buffalo Grove Area Chamber since 1989, also serves as director and past-president of the Buffalo Grove Friends of the Parks Foundation and as a member of the Village of Buffalo Grove Arts Commission.
