Location a bonus for Spring Cove

A neighborhood that is close to everything that attracts people to Schaumburg, yet is still quiet, may seem like an impossibility, but not to the residents of Spring Cove.

Tucked away behind a small strip shopping center on Wise Road on the village's south side, Spring Cove attracts many move-up buyers.

"It's perfect for families who already live in Schaumburg and want to stay here or for those who bought starter homes in outlying communities and want to return for schools, park district, Woodfield shopping or the commute to work," said Karen Kusek of RE/MAX Suburban in Schaumburg.

Originally residents of Roselle, Richard and Nancy Elkin wanted to stay in the area so they could continue to go to Trinity Lutheran Church but felt priced out of the community.

They put a down payment on a home in Spring Cove on the last day of 1976 to beat a price increase. They have lived there since 1978, raising two children in the process.

"What we liked is that there is not a lot of traffic because people don't cut through (in their cars)," Richard Elkin said. "But it's close to everything."

Kusek said the wetland and lake in the community are added attractions for the residents.

Spring Cove homes range in size from 2,000 to 2,600 square feet. A handful of custom-built homes grace the neighborhood along with six different models built by Ridge Development.

The Tifany and Madrid, two ranch models, are among the smaller homes, along with the Crestmoor, a tri-level house.

Larger homes are the tri-level Del Ray and two colonials, the Shenandoah and the Riviera. The larger colonials had options for a fifth bedroom.

Other options included fireplaces, basements, crawl spaces, family room extensions and patios.

Sale prices during the last year have ranged from $412,000 to $500,000, although homes went for as high as $610,000 in 2006.

"Buyers love the huge bedrooms and the quality construction," Kusek said. "The Shenandoah master bedroom measures 12-by-28 and the other three bedrooms are also large."

The Elkins like the layout of their home.

"It's pretty good construction," Richard said. "What Nancy likes is that you can see from the kitchen straight into the family room."

"We have natural woodwork," she added. "We do like the large size of our rooms."

The couple noted that Ridge Development also allowed them to semi-customize their home, adding things such as a laundry chute, which was not in the original plans.

Local shopping and restaurants are just minutes east of Spring Cove at the intersection of Wise and Roselle roads.

For commuters, access to Chicago is via the Metra Milwaukee Road West line about two miles southwest of the subdivision, while the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway also provides a link to downtown Chicago.
