Briefs: Elgin man guilty in beating

A 40-year-old Elgin man faces prison time for attacking a motorist with a metal rod. Javier Perez, of the 200 block of Jefferson Avenue, was convicted at a jury trial Monday of vehicular invasion and aggravated battery, Kane County prosecutors said. On July 26, Perez walked up to a car on the 200 block of Spring Street in Elgin and attacked the driver with a 5-foot-long metal bar. The beating continued when the driver tried to run away, police said. Perez, who is in jail, faces four to 15 years in prison at sentencing, set for Jan. 17.

Elgin seniors to get rebates

Seniors who own homes in the Cook County part of Elgin will receive rebate checks from the city in the next few weeks. The $200 checks are mailed annually to seniors 65 or older who own a home and who filed an application with the county. Senior residents who own a mobile home receive a $35 rebate. Seniors in Kane County received checks in June. Call the city's senior citizen information line at (847) 931-6105 for more information.

4 U-46 teachers net honor

This year, four Elgin Area School District U-46 teachers earned the profession's top honor by achieving National Board Certification, according to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Teachers joining this group of high-caliber classroom performers are Maryellyn Friel from Heritage Elementary, Elaine Goldstein and Nicholas Vassolo from Streamwood High School, and Debra Wehr from Larsen Middle School.

New junior prosecutor

The Kane County state's attorney's office has hired a new lawyer to help prosecute traffic and misdemeanor cases. Brandon McNulty, 32, is a Milwaukee native and graduate of John Marshall Law School in Chicago. A former traffic prosecutor for the city of Chicago, McNulty will be assigned to the traffic and misdemeanor courtroom in St. Charles.
