Carmel claims Galatte crown
Carmel floored 'em in the Al Galatte Invitational on Saturday night at Rolling Meadows.
The meet has a format which uses only two competitors from each team in each event.
Carmel's 17.8 on floor exercise counted a 9.1 from Lauren Pytel and an 8.7 from Danie Clement. That was among the best single event totals in the meet, and it helped the Corsairs to a winning 67.45 score.
Stevenson placed second at 66.6.
Other area teams included Wheaton North (fifth, 64.95), Conant (sixth, 64.75), Prospect (seventh, 63.5), Barrington (eighth, 63.4), Buffalo Grove (ninth, 62.8), Lake Park (10th, 62.5), Elk Grove (11th, 59.9), Mundelein (14th, 58.7) and Rolling Meadows (15th, 57.75).
Carmel's Amber Mirski had the top effort in balance beam at 9.0. Rolling Meadows' Jen Anderson was fourth at 8.45, and Carmel's Ofelia Carmichael was sixth at 8.2
On floor exercise, Wheaton North's Sarah Beste won with a 9.65, just ahead of second-place Shana Manning of Stevenson (9.45) and Cody Ksioszk of Lakes (9.35).
Barrington's Laura Sculley produced a 9.8 to win vault, where Buffalo Grove's Linda Dunne was second with a 9.55 and Lake Park's Ashley Nelson was third at 9.45.
Conant's Cara Cosentino won parallel bars with a 9.2, ahead of Stevenson's Stephanie Wojton (second, 9.05) and Prospect's Katie Colmone (fifth, 8.25).
At Downers North: Fremd won the Big Purple Invitational handily with 111.200 points. It was the 15th consecutive year that Fremd has won the invitational.
Mary Burke and Tori Sarantakis finished first and second, respectively, in the all-around to lead the Vikings.
Burke won vault (9.725), parallel bars (9.6) and floor exercise (9.475) for an all-around average of 9.525.
Sarantakis won beam with 9.35 and had an all-around average of 9.325.
Sandburg finished second at 106.075, and Lyons placed third at 103.4.
Libertyville placed eighth with 98.025. The Wildcats' top individual finish came from Amanda Winn on balance beam; she placed eighth at 8.775.
Leah Herchenbach had Libertyville's top all-around average (8.55) and placed 10th on floor exercise (8.675).
Hersey, which placed ninth at 97.275, got its top finishes from Kate Reszotko on floor exercise (8.9, ninth) and bars (8.675, 10th).
Boys swimming
At Barrington: Naperville North won two of the three relays to edge host Barrington in a quad meet on Saturday.
The Huskies amassed 426 points to 401 for Barrington. Madison West (Wis.) placed third at 357 and Oak Park was fourth at 194.
Barrington had individual winners in Nick Santoro (50-yard freestyle, 22.67) and Brian Marko (100 fly, 54.46). The Broncos also won the 200 free relay in 1:29.69 with Justin Yu, Santoro, Daniel Comyn and Ben Redpath.
Naperville North had a double winner in Conor Handley (200 IM, 100 backstroke).
Handley joined Jackson Hill, Jon Leu and Will Heidler on the winning 400 free relay (3:16.24) and Jack Ruble, Heidler and Hill on the winning 200 medley relay (1:41.03).
Oak Park's Eric Hallman won both the 200 free (1:50.01) and the 500 free (4:57.22).
