Robbers hit Libertyville Walgreens
Two masked thieves held up a Libertyville drugstore Thursday night, the first armed robbery in the village since 2004, police said.
No one was hurt in the robbery at Walgreens, 1470 S. Milwaukee Ave. The thieves fled with an unknown amount of cash.
The stickup happened about 10:45 p.m. while the store was open and full of customers, Police Chief Pat Carey said. It lasted just a few seconds, he said.
At least one of the thieves was armed with a handgun, police said.
One of the robbers went to the front counter and took money out of a cash register, police said. The other went to the back of the store and jumped over the pharmacy counter as an employee was ushering customers into a back room for safety, according to a witness who asked that her name not be used.
"It was very, very scary," the witness told the Daily Herald. "I thought the robbers were going to come into the back where we were."
They didn't, however, and left the store. The robbers last were seen headed north on foot, police said.
Mundelein and Vernon Hills officers helped Libertyville police search the area for the suspects but didn't find them. Carey suspects they drove off in a car parked nearby.
Police will examine the store's security video for clues.
