"The Crucible": "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller will be presented by the College of Lake County Theatre Department at 7:30 p.m. today in the Studio Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the Grayslake campus.

Based on the Salem witch trials of 1692, this drama tells the story of a group of young women who are accused of witchcraft.

Tickets are $10 each for the general public and $8 for CLC students/staff, seniors 65 and over and JLC season subscribers. Prices include a $1 per ticket James Lumber Center restoration fee. 2007-08 Concert Season: The College of Lake County Music department has planned announce its 2007-08 season. Concerts will be held in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the CLC Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Washington St. Tickets are $5 for the general public and $4 for CLC/seniors/children unless noted (price includes $1 JLC restoration fee). • Jazz Sunday: The CLC Monday and Tuesday Night Jazz Ensembles featuring Los Angeles-based trumpeter Chuck Findley, who has played with Branford Marsalis and the NBC Tonight Show Band and the Buddy Rich Orchestra at 4 p.m. Sunday.

• Concert Band: Classical and modern band music played by the Concert Band, directed by Paul Hefner at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 8.

• Jazz Sunday, with a tribute to Buddy Rich and His Orchestra: 4 p.m. Feb. 24.

Paralegal information: Learn what it takes to begin a paralegal career at information sessions sponsored by the College of Lake County Paralegal Studies Program. Potential students will learn about the paralegal profession, the job outlook and CLC's paralegal certificate and the Associate in Applied Science degree. They will also meet the faculty and other students.

Information sessions will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. Nov. 28, from 9 to 10 a.m. Jan. 12 and from 7 to 8 p.m. Jan. 15 in room T 117 on the Grayslake Campus.

Discovery! Workshop: As part of College of Lake County's Discovery! program, designed for adult learners 50 and over, R.J. Lindsey will portray colorful businessman and Chicago banker, Charles Gates Dawes from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 29. Brigadier General Dawes will share details about the politics and alliances that exploded into WWI. Dawes went on to become the first director of the Bureau of the Budget under President Warren Harding and served as vice president with Calvin Coolidge. The course fee is $15.

Food and Beverage Servers: The College of Lake County will offer the Beverage and Alcohol Sellers and Servers Educational Training (BASSET - PSST15) course. This four-hour class is certified by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission and will be offered on Dec. 1. The cost is $35.

Holiday Dance Concert: This year's Holiday Dance Concert by the College of Lake County Prairie Spirits Dance Troupe will be a combination of various styles of dance and music - jazz, classical, contemporary urban and holiday favorites - interwoven with a holiday theme.

The dance concert will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 and at 2 p.m. Dec. 2 in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts.

The dance concert will include a guest appearance by the Valerie Alpert Dance Company, a "Rockettes" style kick line number, the "Peanuts" comic strip gang, a tap number done to Frank Sinatra's "I Won't Dance," two sections of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" and the "Guys and Dolls" number "Luck Be a Lady." In a modern dance finale, a piece called "The Tree," 15 dancers will use giant yoga balls as ornaments, stacking them into a "tree" they form with their bodies.

Fall Xplore classes: Middle school students can make Saturdays a day to explore new topics such as manicures, Web pages or fencing through the College of Lake County Xplore program.

A variety of Xplore classes will be offered Dec. 1 at the Lake County High Schools Technology Campus in Grayslake. Classes will be offered in Babysitting Certification, Web Design: Intermediate Dreamweaver, Hair Styling I, Graphic Design: Beginning Web Animation, Holiday Portrait Studio and Test Taking Strategies.

Xplore classes are offered in half-day sessions, mornings and afternoons.

The Lake County High Schools Technology Campus is in the northwest corner adjacent to the College of Lake County Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Washington St.

Online classes are available in LEGO Engineering or Video Game Making for youth ages 8 to 17. For sports enthusiasts, late-starting Kids First Sports Safety programs are offered in baseball and soccer at the CLC Grayslake campus multipurpose field.

Thaddeus Rex: Thaddeus Rex, a nationally recognized children's songwriter, comedian and book nut, will perform a fun children's show at College of Lake County at 2 p.m. Dec. 2 in room C 005 (C Wing Auditorium) on the Grayslake campus.

Tickets for this family-friendly show are $5 or the donation of one new or gently used book per person. Donated books will be given to the Lake County Reach Out and Reach Program. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Earnest auditions: Actors from the community are invited to audition for the College of Lake County Theatre Department's spring production of the classic Oscar Wilde comedy, "The Importance of Being Earnest."

Auditions will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 3 and 5 in the Studio Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the CLC Grayslake campus. Actors need only attend one audition.

Actors should bring an acting resume (if they have one) and prepare a two-minute memorized monologue from any comedy written before 1900. Callbacks will be held from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Dec. 6. The play's director, Craig Rich, is looking for four women and five men for the cast. Copies of the play are available at the College of Lake County Library/LRC circulation desk for in-library reading.

Rehearsals will begin Jan. 14. Performances are scheduled for Feb. 22 to Mar. 1. Rehearsals will be held Monday through Thursday evenings with the occasional Friday evening until technical rehearsal week. Actors should make sure they have these dates and times open before auditioning.

Massage therapy clinic: The college-affiliated student massage therapy clinic at 3000 Dundee Road, Northbrook is taking appointments for basic Swedish massages given by students in the College of Lake County massage therapy program. The cost for a 50-minute massage is $30 for the general public and $20 for CLC faculty, staff and CLC students with staff or student ID. A new noncredit massage therapy program kicked off this fall at CLC. Potential students can learn more about the career and training by attending a massage therapy information session from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 4 at the Southlake Educational Center, 1120 N. Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills.

The program prepares students to take a national certification exam in massage therapy after only two semesters of noncredit CLC course work. Completion of the program will be noted on CLC transcripts, and students will receive a certificate of completion through the A.S.I.S. Massage School. After completing the program, students are eligible to apply for state licensure.

Film series: The College of Lake County will present a series of independent films. There is no charge for the films, which will be screened at 7 p.m. on Fridays in room A162 (unless noted otherwise) on the CLC Grayslake Campus. Upcoming films in the CLC Independent Film Series include:

• "King Corn" will be shown on Dec. 7. The film concerns two recent college graduates who travel to their ancestral home in rural Iowa, plant a single acre of America's most powerful crop, corn, and attempt to follow its fate as food. In their year-long adventure they see the realities of modern farming first-hand, explore a fast-food nation built on corn syrup sodas and corn-fed meat and come to question government subsidies, intensive agriculture and cheap food.

Art gallery exhibit schedule: Several new art exhibits are planned for 2007-08 at the College of Lake County Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art. All events are free and open to the public. The gallery will present the following exhibits in the coming year, and opening receptions are planned for each exhibit:

• Through Dec. 14: "Karena Karras and Bert Menco: Daydreams and Night Dreams." Chicago artist Karena Karras creates highly imaginative and exquisitely crafted surrealist oil paintings. Bert Menco, Evanston, will display drawings and intaglio prints. Like Karras, Menco's images also draw upon an inner vision and convey a sense of poetic narrative. A reception will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 9.

• Jan. 18 to Feb. 24, 2008: Members Exhibition. A diverse group show of all fine art media by 100 Lake County artists. Funds from artist memberships support the endowment of the Robert T. Wright Gallery. A reception will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 18.

• Feb. 29 to April 6: Carrie Iverson -- Survey. Carrie Iverson is a printmaker, painter and glass artist based in Chicago. She will exhibit works in these media and display a site-specific installation. A reception will be held from 7-9 p.m. Feb. 29, with a gallery talk by the artist from 6:15-7 p.m.

• April 11 to May 17: The College of Lake County Student Art Competition. A juried exhibit by current art students at CLC featuring painting, drawing, computer graphics, photography, ceramics, jewelry and sculpture. The CLC Student Activities Office sponsors cash merit awards and the Lake County Art League sponsors two $500 scholarships for art students. A reception will be from 7 to 9 p.m. April 11.

• May 23 to July 3: "Kathy Weaver and Mary Seyfarth: Whimsical Musings." Kathy Weaver presents fiberworks and paintings that are at an intersection between technology and art. Mary Seyfarth displays ceramics and small sculptures and is the chairwoman of the ceramics department at Columbia College. Both artists reside in Lake County. A reception will be from 7 to 9 p.m. May 23.

Veterans Monument: A new veterans memorial monument at the College of Lake County Grayslake campus is being planned, and the CLC Veterans Memorial Task Force is offering the opportunity for community members to purchase engraved bricks to honor those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The engraved bricks will form the circular base of the monument, which will be built next to Willow Lake, in the grassy area between the C Wing and Library/Learning Resource Center. The monument will feature a life-sized bronze sculpture that depicts a member of the Armed Forces paying his respects at the grave marker of a fallen hero. Artist Cindy Seng of Libertyville will create the statue. The monument will also feature the seals of all five branches of the U.S. military, three flagpoles and up to 3,000 engraved bricks. Donations received from the fundraising drive will be used for the 2008 construction and ongoing maintenance of the monument.

For a contribution of $50 for one or $125 for three, four-by-eight-inch paver bricks will be engraved to honor a service member, and can include the name, rank, branch of service and dates of service. To order a brick or make a tax deductible contribution, contact the College of Lake County Foundation at (847) 543-2091. Theater season: The College of Lake County theater department's 2007-08 season has been announced:

• "The Importance of Being Earnest" will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22, 23, 28, 29 and Mar. 1 and 2 p.m. Feb. 24 in the Studio Theatre.

Oscar Wilde's brilliant comedy of manners follows the antics of two bachelors as they pursue true love and the perfect cucumber sandwich.

Auditions will be at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 3 and 4.

Tickets are $10 each for the general public and $8 for CLC students/staff, seniors 65 and older and JLC season subscribers.

• "How I Learned to Drive" will be presented at 7:30 p.m. April 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19 and at 2 p.m. April 13.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for drama, this play is a tale of survival as seen through the lens of a troubling relationship between a young girl and an older man. Co-presented with the CLC Women's Center in the Studio Theatre with a guest director.

Auditions will be at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 28 and 29.

• "Little Shop of Horrors," will be presented at 7:30 p.m. July 18, 19, July 24, 25 and 26 and 2 p.m. July 20 and 27 in the Studio Theatre.

A down-and-out skid row floral assistant becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving.

Auditions will be at 6:30 p.m. on May 19 and 20.

Tickets cost $16 and $13. Prices include a $1 per ticket James Lumber Center restoration fee.

Theater rentals: Space reservations are now being taken for community groups, arts organizations and corporations interested in renting the theater facilities in the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts at the College of Lake County in Grayslake.

The JLC includes a 600-seat proscenium Mainstage Theatre, the 250-seat thrust stage Studio Theatre and the 125-flexible-seat Frank J. Harnish Experimental Theatre. The theater spaces feature professional quality lighting and sound and are ADA compliant with wheelchair access, assistive hearing devices, Braille signage and other amenities.
