Briefs: Robbery suspect arrested

A suspected bank robber is in custody after being captured by police shortly after robbing a Antioch Township bank Friday. A man walked into a bank at Route 59 and Grass Lake Road around 4:40 p.m., set a device on the counter, indicated it was explosive and demanded money, Lake County Sheriff's Department Undersheriff Charles Fagan said. The man fled on foot with the money and left the device sitting on the bank counter. A police dog tracked the man's scent going south from the bank. At the same time, a deputy responding from the scene noticed a van in front of him driving north. He pulled the driver over and detained him. That man later implicated himself in the robbery and police recovered the money from the bank, Fagan said. After evacuating the area and diverting traffic, the Waukegan bomb squad determined the device was inert, consisting of batteries in a plastic bag in a case with a blinking light on it, Fagan said. Lake County sheriff's police have turned the case over to the FBI, who would not comment on the incident late Friday.

Driver named in crash

Lake County Coroner Richard Keller said Maurice Torres, 49, of Fox Lake and Schaumburg, was killed Thursday in an accident at about 5 p.m. at Route 12 and Mildor Road. Dana M. Cameron, 34, of 180 S. Ela Road in Barrington, was charged with felony driving under the influence causing death. She also was charged with reckless driving and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. A witness to the car crash followed Cameron, who police say caused the crash. The witness called police while he was following the suspect and led them to where she had stopped, police officials said. The Cavalier driven by Cameron sideswiped Torres' 2004 Chrysler Sebring, sending it careening into northbound lanes, police said. The Sebring then was struck by a northbound 2006 Cadillac. The 56-year-old Ingleside woman driving the Cadillac was flown by emergency helicopter to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. Her name has not been released by police. Route 12 was shut down for several hours after the crash. Traffic on nearby roads, including Route 120, also was affected.
