Couple earns kudos for supporting cancer cure

The Lymphoma Research Foundation honored Bartlett residents Scott and Charlene Seaman Oct. 30, during a dinner at the Drake Hotel, for their leadership efforts on behalf of the organization.

Scott, a partner of the Chicago-based law firm of Meckler Bulger and Tilson, is a survivor of non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He helped form the Chicago Chapter of the Lymphoma Research Foundation with his wife, Charlene, in 2002. Since that time, the couple has helped raise more than $1.4 million for the fight against blood cancer with their Chicago Lymphomathon 5K walk/run.

• The Illinois Health Care Association and the Illinois Council on Long Term Care selected Schaumburg resident Zipporah Wambui a "Hero" in long-term care.

Wambui, a Certified Nursing Assistant at Alden of Old Town West Intermediate Care Facility for the Developmentally Disabled in Bloomingdale, was recognized for positively impacting 'quality of life' and her commitment to serving the needs of residents and families.

• The Palatine Kiwanis Club's annual installation dinner took place Oct. 16 at Vittorio's. Chuck Callea was sworn in as president, with Don Bextel as president-elect, Len Mazurowski as treasurer and Jim Dewey as secretary. Directors will include: Jack Brynildssen, Jim Dewey, Tom Kramer, Dennis Kemp and Roy Marzano.

• Elk Grove residents, Patrick Anderson, a James B. Conant High School graduate, and John Gorecki, an Elk Grove High School graduate, were selected as members of Millikin University's Symphonic Wind Ensemble for the 2007-08 season.

Anderson and Gorecki both music education, instrumental majors, were chosen by audition. Anderson plays the trumpet, Gorecki plays clarinet.

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble is Millikin's premier large instrumental ensemble. They perform in public schools throughout the Midwest under the direction of Dr. Gary Shaw, director of bands at Millikin University, Decatur.

• Alma Velayo, daughter of Paz and Augusto Velayo of Bartlett, a first-year student at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, participated in the college's annual White Coat Ceremony held Oct. 4, at the Holiday Inn By the Bay in Portland, Maine.

The White Coat Ceremony formally recognizes the transition students make from lay persons to those assuming the responsibility of physicians.
