Massage therapy clinic: The college-affiliated student massage therapy clinic at 3000 Dundee Road, Northbrook, is taking appointments for basic Swedish massages given by students in the College of Lake County massage therapy program. The cost for a 50-minute massage is $30 for the general public and $20 for CLC faculty, staff and CLC students with staff or student ID. A new noncredit massage therapy program kicked off this fall at CLC. Potential students can learn more about the career and training by attending a massage therapy information session from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the CLC Lakeshore Campus, 111 N. Genesee St., Waukegan, or Dec. 4 at the Southlake Educational Center, 1120 N. Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills.

National French Week: The food and films of France will be celebrated at the College of Lake County during National French Week, through Friday. The film "Vatel" (2000) will be shown at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday in Room C003. This 2000 Cannes Film Festival selection with Gérard Depardieu as Vatel, tells the true story of the Masterchef of Prince de Condé, who plans a magnificent dinner and spectacular entertainment in honor of King Louis XIV and 2,000 members of the court when disaster strikes. There is no cost to see the movie.

For Entrepreneurs: Interactive workshops addressing these topics for entrepreneurs will be offered during November by the Illinois Small Business Development Center at the College of Lake County. Workshops are held in the Technology Building at the CLC Grayslake campus unless otherwise noted.

• Starting a Business in Illinois (TBSM 10) will be offered from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. The workshop will address the federal, state and local laws that can affect someone starting a business. The course fee is $40.

• Maximizing Public Relations (TBSM 54) will be offered from 7 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 13. The workshop will cover the effective use of public relations and media relations to grow a business with minimum investment. Participants will also learn how to write an effective news release. The course fee is $35.

• QuickBooks Module 1 -- A Practical Introduction (TBSM 20) will be offered from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 14 at the CLC Southlake Educational Center in Vernon Hills. This hands-on workshop will cover financial statements, including profit and loss, cash flow, balance sheet and breakeven. The course fee is $149.

• Legal Fundamentals for Small Businesses (TBSM 81) will be offered from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 14. Topics include the best way to structure a company: sole proprietorship, Limited Liability Company or S or C Corporation. The presenter is Brian Fons, president and regional counsel of Corporate Creations Chicago LLC. The course fee is $40.

Veterans Day Ceremony: A Veterans Day Ceremony will be held at 11:45 a.m. Friday in Room C 005 (C Wing Auditorium) on the Grayslake campus of the College of Lake County. The keynote speaker will be Col. Barrye L. Price, U.S. Army commander, Eastern Sector U.S. Military Entrance Processing Command. Before and after the ceremony, members of the CLC Veterans Memorial Task Force will be present to provide information and accept donations for the new tribute brick campaign that is part of a planned veterans memorial monument at the CLC Grayslake campus. For a contribution of $50 for one brick or $125 for three bricks, 4-by-8-inch paver bricks will be engraved to honor a service member, and can include the name, rank, branch of service and dates of service. The engraved bricks will form the circular base of the monument. Food and Beverage Servers: The College of Lake County will offer the Beverage and Alcohol Sellers and Servers Educational Training (BASSET - PSST15) course. This four-hour class is certified by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission and will be offered on Monday and Dec. 1. The cost is $35. A Spanish version of the class (PSST61) will be offered on Nov. 14.

CLC also offers the Food Safety Refresher Course (PSST 23) for certified food service sanitation managers seeking renewal of their five-year Illinois Department of Public Health Food Service Sanitation Manager Certification. The fee is $55. The class will be offered on Friday. The class is also taught in Spanish and will be offered in the spring semester 2008. "The Crucible": "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller will be presented by the College of Lake County Theatre Department at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and Nov. 15, 16, 17 and at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Studio Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the Grayslake campus.

Based on the Salem witch trials of 1692, this drama tells the story of a group of young women who are accused of witchcraft.

Tickets are $10 each for the general public and $8 for CLC students/staff, seniors 65 and over and JLC season subscribers. Prices include a $1 per ticket James Lumber Center restoration fee. New art exhibit: A new exhibit of 36 artworks by Karena Karras and Bert Menco called "Daydreams and Night Dreams" will open Friday at the Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art at the College of Lake County.

The public is invited to attend a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday which will include refreshments and music by pianist Robert Zaun. The exhibit will run through Dec. 14

Chicago artist Karena Karras creates surrealist oil paintings. Bert Menco of Evanston displays paintings, drawings and intaglio prints.

Financial aid seminar: Find out how to successfully navigate the world of college financial aid at a free workshop from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the College of Lake County Lakeshore Campus in Room N119.

"Millions of Dollars for College: How to Get Your Share" will offer advice on how to apply for financial aid from the government and for private scholarships.

Fall Xplore classes: Middle school students can make Saturdays a day to explore new topics such as manicures, Web pages or fencing through the College of Lake County Xplore program.

A variety of Xplore classes will be offered Saturday and Dec. 1 at the Lake County High Schools Technology Campus in Grayslake.

Classes Saturday include Infant and Child CPR and First Aid, Intermediate PowerPoint, Intermediate Photoshop, Web Design: Beginning Dreamweaver and Personal Care and Make-Up Application.

Dec. 1 classes will be offered in Babysitting Certification, Web Design: Intermediate Dreamweaver, Hair Styling I, Graphic Design: Beginning Web Animation, Holiday Portrait Studio and Test Taking Strategies.

Xplore classes are offered in half-day sessions, mornings and afternoons.

The Lake County High Schools Technology Campus is in the northwest corner adjacent to the College of Lake County Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Washington St.

Online classes are available in LEGO Engineering or Video Game Making for youth ages 8 to 17. For sports enthusiasts, late-starting Kids First Sports Safety programs are offered in baseball and soccer at the CLC Grayslake campus multipurpose field.

Storytelling Concert: The College of Lake County Legacy Storytellers will perform from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the CLC Southlake Educational Center in Vernon Hills. The event is sponsored by CLC's Discovery! program, designed for adult learners 50 and over, and will be held in Room V340.

Storytellers Fred Berchtold, Wes Bucey, Zane Chait, "the Double Deckers" Jim and Karen, Suzie Garfield, John Greven, Carol Kerman, Meg Macdonald and Nancy Neckerman will perform a sampler of history, fantasy, memories, humor, horror and traditional tales.

New York theater trip: See four Broadway shows during a guided group tour over spring break 2008, sponsored by the College of Lake County. The five-day, four-night New York theater trip will run March 25 to 29 and include tickets to four Broadway shows, round trip non-stop air fare from O'Hare, lodging for four nights in the Broadway show district and free time for sightseeing and shopping.

An informational meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 13 in Room E124 (in the Job Center) at the College of Lake County Grayslake Campus. The total trip cost is $1,895 per person double occupancy. A $900 deposit is due on the registration deadline, Nov. 19.

Explore health careers: Learn about the health care profession and what it takes to train for a career in health care at an information session from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 14 in Room T332 (Technology Building) on the Grayslake campus.

The session will provide information on certified nurse assisting, dental hygiene, emergency medical technician, massage therapy, medical assisting, medical billing, medical coding, medical imaging, medical office work, medical transcription, nursing, pharmacy technician, phlebotomy, surgical technology and pre-professional programs such as pharmacy, medicine and veterinary medicine. Training for these careers can be completed in two years or less.

Multi-chamber event: Members of eight chambers of commerce from southern Lake County are invited to a multi-chamber after hours event from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 15 at the College of Lake County's Southlake Educational Center classroom building, 1120 S. Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills.

With the theme "Up on the Roof," the event will feature tours and information on the green roofs at Southlake.

The participating chambers of commerce are Buffalo Grove, Highland Park, Deerfield/Bannockburn/Riverwoods, Highwood, Green Oaks/Libertyville/Mundelein/Vernon Hills, Greater Lincolnshire, Lake Forest/Lake Bluff and Lake Zurich.

Film series: The College of Lake County will present a series of independent films. There is no charge for the films, which will be screened at 7 p.m. on Fridays in Room A162 (unless noted otherwise) on the CLC Grayslake Campus. Upcoming films in the CLC Independent Film Series include:

• "Riding Solo on Top of the World" will be presented on Nov. 16. Director Gaurav Jani covers thousands of miles on his motorcycle, from his home in Mumbai through the Changthang Plateau, one of the most remote places in the world. Along the way, he films his journey through the beautiful landscapes and the people he meets along the way, including the Buddhist Chang pas.

• "King Corn" will be shown on Dec. 7. The film concerns two recent college graduates who travel to their ancestral home in rural Iowa, plant a single acre of America's most powerful crop, corn, and attempt to follow its fate as food. In their year-long adventure they see the realities of modern farming first-hand, explore a fast-food nation built on corn syrup sodas and corn-fed meat and come to question government subsidies, intensive agriculture and cheap food.

Holiday Art Sale: The College of Lake County's Annual Holiday Art Sale will be held earlier than usual this year, from Nov. 17 to 20. The juried sale will feature original art by 30 different Illinois artists, including hand-made jewelry, wearable art, ceramics, wood and glass sculpture, gourds and hand-made soaps and candles.

This year, the sale will include a group of artists from Nicasa's Women of Worth. These are local women who are in treatment and recovery programs at Nicasa (Northern Illinois Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse), who will present hand-crafted jewelry using Kazuri beads from Kenya. These handmade beads are created outside of Nairobi on the former coffee plantation of Karen Blixen (of "Out of Africa" fame) by women who most often are the sole providers for their families. The workshop enables women to find a way out of living in poverty.

The Holiday Art Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 17, from 1 to 5 p.m. Nov. 18 and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Nov 19 and 20 in the Atrium located outside the Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art in the Library/Learning Resource Center at CLC's Grayslake Campus.
