Briefs: Busse Woods death suicide
The death of a 38-year-old Des Plaines woman found submerged in a car in a Busse Woods pond was ruled a suicide by drowning on Tuesday. She was pulled from her silver Mercedes sedan in the forest preserve pond near Elk Grove Village Monday afternoon. She was taken to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, where she was pronounced dead. The Cook County medical examiner's office performed the autopsy and ruled the cause of death.
Search called off
Wisconsin police have called off their search for a missing Buffalo Grove 18-year-old and turned the case over to Buffalo Grove police, officials said Tuesday. Sauk County sheriff's officials have exhausted their leads searching for Lee Cutler after his car was found off Highway 33 near Baraboo, Wis., on Oct. 22, police said. Cutler, a senior at Stevenson High School, was last seen in Buffalo Grove around 10 a.m. Oct. 20. Several of his belongings, including his vehicle, were found near and in the Baraboo River.
Des Plaines bank robbed
Police are looking for a man wanted in connection with a Des Plaines bank robbery Tuesday. Police said a man entered TCF Bank, 1500 S. Lee St., around 1:41 p.m. and demanded the teller give him money from the drawer. The man implied he had a handgun but one was not shown. The man fled in an unknown direction after the robbery. The FBI is investigating.
Longtime official dies
Services for Herbert L Weeks, 78, who had worked for Mount Prospect for 36 years, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at All Saints Lutheran Church, 630 S. Quentin Road in Palatine. Visitation is 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Friedrichs Funeral Home, 320 W. Central Road in Mount Prospect. In 1959, Weeks began working in the village's public works department. In 1977, he became public works director and held that position until he retired in 1995.
Road rage leads to charge
Vasile Toma, 53, of 930 E. Howard Ave. in Des Plaines, was arrested around 2 p.m. Thursday and charged with unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated assault, according to police reports. The report said another motorist honked at Toma when he turned into a driveway on the 600 block of East Howard Avenue without signaling; Toma then followed that motorist's and confronted him when he stopped to look at a boat for sale on the 2000 block of South Webster Lane. Toma's Skokie court date was set for Nov. 21.
$25,000 in phones stolen
Burglars forced open the rear door and stole boxes of cell phones around 10:30 p.m. Friday from Wireless Toyz, 1 E. Algonquin Road in Arlington Heights, police said. According to reports, a videotape recorded three burglars pulling up to the rear of the store and later putting the cell phones in the trunk and driving away. The cell phones were not discovered missing until 4 p.m. Saturday, reports said. Their value was estimated at $25,000.
Dist. 211 Halloween events
Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 is offering Halloween events today for area families with young children. From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., a trick-or-treat festival will held at Fremd High School in Palatine for kids 12 or younger. From 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., a community event for elementary and preschool-aged kids will be held at Hoffman Estates High School. From 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., a trick-or-treat fest will be held at Palatine High School for kids 10 and younger. These events are free and adult supervision is required. At Schaumburg High School, members of Students Helping Others group and other students will be "trick-or-treating" for canned goods for the Schaumburg Food Pantry. Canned good donations can also be dropped off at the school's main office from 7 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. Thursday.
