Aurora men charged in Winfield armed robbery
Two Aurora men were arrested early Friday after an attempted armed robbery in a Winfield parking lot, authorities said.
Luis A. Acevedo, 26, and Ruben A. Ramos Jr., 27, have each been charged with one felony count of attempted armed robbery. They were being held Friday at the DuPage County jail.
Both men were taken into custody following an incident that happened around 12:20 a.m. Friday.
Winfield police said a man with a handgun came up to a parked vehicle in a strip mall lot at County Farm and Geneva roads and demanded the motorist get out.
The motorist put his car in reverse, attempting to escape, police said, when the offender broke the driver's-side window with the handgun.
When the offender fled the scene in a dark-colored SUV, the victim called police and attempted to follow the vehicle, authorities said. But he lost sight of it near Pleasant Hill and Jewell roads.
Winfield police soon spotted the vehicle driving south on Winfield Road and stopped it near Roosevelt Road with the help of Warrenville police, authorities said. Police retrieved a black automatic handgun during the stop.
Acevedo and Ramos were taken into custody without incident. Both are expected to appear this morning in bond court.
