Briefs: Elk Grove ups some fees

The Elk Grove Village board on Tuesday approved increases for health inspection fees for businesses. Food vending machines, food dealers, food processors, restaurants, caterers, day-care centers, and day-care homes will see an increase from $50 to $100 for a third inspection. Fourth inspections will increase from $100 to $150. The reason for the increase is to promote greater compliance with the businesses, village officials said. The first two inspections are considered routine and are free. But if there are problems and the village's health department goes back again, it costs the company a fee.

Tax exemption granted

The Wheeling village board Tuesday granted a Class 6B property tax exemption to Philos Technologies Inc., a new company moving into town. The company currently is located in Glendale Heights, Korea, Michigan and Ohio and is looking to expand. The Wheeling location at 110 to 112 Carpenter Ave. would be the headquarters for the group, which heats and stores metal parts for its customers. The exemption was granted under the abandoned status section. With the exemption, the tax bill is $48,000 a year instead of $107,000.

Perfect ACTs in District 211

Three students from Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 earned perfect ACT scores last school year, district officials announced. This was Shymanik's second perfect score, as he earned a 36 on a national test date. About 60 percent of college-bound seniors take the ACT, and last year 59 students in the state scored a 36, the highest composite score. The final score is an average of four tests. Since 1998, 21 District 211 students have scored perfectly.
