Fraternity brothers to run in cancer race

Linda Bowman has survived it. But she wants to make certain that women who battle breast cancer in the future have an easier time than she did. Or, better yet, she'd love to see the disease wiped out.

That's why the Roselle woman will be participating in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's Race for a Cure Saturday at Grant Park in Chicago.

Last year she participated in the race with her son, Bernie Warn. But this year her son surprised her by forming an army of his friends to run with his mother. They have raised more than $1,600 for the foundation.

"I'm very touched," Bowman said. "I truly believe it's a great cause. They are making strides everyday to finding a cure for breast cancer. Then they will be much closer to finding a cure for the other cancers."

The friends, all members of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity at Illinois State University, are driving up for the event.

Two of them, Casey Ciezki and Keith Fogarty of Medinah, are Lake Park High School alumni. Also joining the race are Tim Gregory and Matt Whalen of Naperville.

The group is still accepting donations, which can be made online at www.active.com/donate/chicagorftc2007/Sigtau.
