'Green' practices focus of seminar
The Fox River Ecosystem Partnership presents a special watershed-wide Fox River Summit: Creating Green and Lean Communities from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at Bodie Hall at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove. The registration fee is $25 per person. Deadline to register online is Monday at foxriverecosystem.org.
This is the second of two summits made possible through a grant from the Conservation 2000 program of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. A special focus is being placed on communities in the Fox River watershed, and the tools they need to create a "greener" community utilizing best management practices.
Speakers include Lt. Gov. Patrick Quinn, Illinois Environmental Protection Agency director Doug Scott, noted rain garden expert Roger Bannerman, and recycling advocate Kan McKeen of SCARCE.
Several speakers will share information about their special projects, including Karen Stewart of Waubonsee Community College, Jeff Mihelich from the village of Algonquin, Dick Untch from the city of Geneva, and John White from the village of Streamwood.
Rob Linke of Watershed Resource Consultants will discuss "Putting Together A Green Infrastructure Plan for Watershed Protection."
The summit will conclude with a panel on funding "Finding the 'Green" to Go GREEN" featuring Nancy Williamson of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Holly Hudson from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, and Jim Van der Kloot, from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The partnership, established in 1996, is one of 41 ecosystem partnerships in the state under the auspices of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Its territory is the entire Fox River watershed, covering 1,720 square miles and situated within Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, LaSalle, Lee, McHenry and Will counties in Illinois. FREP maintains a comprehensive Web site at foxriverecosystem.org.
