Briefs: Probation for drug sales
An Antioch Township woman was placed on probation for 40 months Thursday after admitting she twice sold cocaine to an undercover police officer. Assistant State's Attorney Steven Derue said Paula Jones, 44, of 23384 Lake Shore Drive, was arrested after selling an undercover agent of the Lake County Metropolitan Enforcement Group just over a gram of cocaine July 11 and July 12. Both transactions took place in a parking lot in Antioch Township, Derue said, and the agent paid $100 for the cocaine each time. Jones also was ordered to perform 150 hours of community service.

New station dedication
A dedication ceremony for the Countryside Fire Protection District's station 1 will be at 10 a.m. Saturday. The community is invited to the event at 801 S. Midlothian Road, Mundelein, where the station will be dedicated in memory of Lloyd Kiene, Countryside's first fire chief, who served from 1959 to 1972. The original station, on land dedicated by the Kiene family, was manned by volunteers. It was demolished to make way for a $5 million new station featuring larger bays to fit modern trucks, a five-story training tower and several other amenities.
Second lawsuit filed
Mundelein-area residents opposed to a shopping center planned for their neighborhood have filed a second lawsuit against the village and municipal leaders to stop the project. Similar to the first lawsuit filed in August, the new complaint, brought Wednesday in Lake County circuit court, aims to stop development of the Mundelein Town Center plaza on Route 60 north of Route 176. Both lawsuits were filed by the nearby Ivanhoe Club property owners association, the Ivanhoe Club and some local residents. Opponents of the plan have complained about the quality of stores planned for the center, the proposal's aesthetics and the process in which the plan was approved.
Disaster plea made to Bush
Illinois congressional leaders Thursday sent a letter to President Bush, urging him to declare Cook, DuPage and McHenry counties federal disaster areas. Late August storms caused widespread flooding and damage across the area, but those three counties didn't make the initial list of those qualifying for aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Lake, Kane, Will, DeKalb, Grundy and LaSalle counties Tuesday were named federal disaster areas. Democratic U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin, and Barack Obama signed the letter. Other supporters include Republican U.S. Reps. Judy Biggert and Mark Kirk and Democratic U.S. Reps. Melissa Bean and Jan Schakowsky.
