Briefs: Plea in fatal crash
A 28-year-old Darien man will turn himself in Oct. 25 to begin a four-year prison sentence after pleading guilty Thursday to aggravated drunken-driving charges for a crash that killed his friend. Justin D. Lind admitted driving intoxicated May 27, 2006, when he lost control of his 1989 Chevrolet Caprice on I-55 at Cass Avenue near Westmont. Prosecutor David Imielski said Lind had a .24 percent blood-alcohol level when it was tested at the hospital. The legal threshold is .08 percent. Lind also had been speeding. His front-seat passenger, Jason Hydzik, 27, of Darien, died in the crash.
Wheaton group earns grant
The DuPage Homeownership Center, a nonprofit housing counseling agency in Wheaton, received a $10,000 grant from Northern Trust Co. to provide financial literacy workshops and counseling. The programs will be provided to transitional housing clients, immigrants, refugees and others who remain unconnected to mainstream financial institutions. Scout safety dates set
Scouts can earn credit toward safety requirements/awards at the "Scouts Play it Safe" program at Safety Town. The program is open to all Brownie troops, Wolf Cub Scout dens and Bear Cub Scout dens within the Naperville Unit District 203 and Indian Prairie Unit 204 boundaries. Session times are Oct. 18, Nov. 16 and Jan. 18 and 20. The program is sponsored by the Naperville Junior Women's Club, the Naperville Police Department and Naperville Fire Department. Glenbard teacher honored
Mark Kaetzer, chairman of the speech arts department at Glenbard East High School, received the service award in secondary education from the Illinois State Theatre Association. The association said his contributions to the world of theater education have been "exemplary and important to everyone across the state."
Employers' help sought
Employers who want to help students bone up on their job hunting skills are invited to participate in a mock interview session starting at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at Aurora University. Modeled after speed-dating events, the AU program matches junior and senior students with visiting interviewers for eight-minute interviewing sessions. After questioning each student for six minutes, each interviewer will offer two minutes of feedback on physical presentation, resumes and answer style, as well as give pointers on how to prepare for real-life interviews. Naperville man arrested
Raymond A. Snyder, 39, of 407 Denali Drive in Naperville, was charged with felony criminal damage to property for shooting out windows of a business at 2135 City Gate Lane with a BB gun, police said Thursday. Offices recovered a BB gun in the arrest. Further investigation is under way to determine if Snyder is responsible for similar criminal damage cases that have occurred in the last six months in the Naperville and Warrenville areas. Tiger cubs undergo surgery
Two Amur tiger cubs at Brookfield Zoo were found in their indoor enclosure Thursday morning suffering injuries to their tails. One cub also had an injured leg. Brookfield veterinarians operated on the young animals, which are expected to make full recoveries. Zoo officials are investigating the cause. The cubs were born May 25.
