Glenbard West lists Matter of Pride
Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn recently honored students with its September Matter of Pride award to 10 students for doing a good deed, improving the school or making a student feel good. The students include Parks Payton, Laura Cebula, Emilie Rio, Victoria Noland, Charles Post, Joseph Vivoda, Calvin Studzinski, Katherine Johnson, John Morales and Raul Perez.
World War II author to sign books
The Reliquarian Organization of Glen Ellyn is featuring a talk by Mike Kuryla, a survivor of the USS Indianapolis battle ship, at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Lake Ellyn Boat House, 645 Lenox Road, Glen Ellyn. He is one of 316 men who survived the destruction of the ship manned by 1,196 sailors during World War II. Kuryla has written a book about his experience and will have copies to autograph and sell. Donate for library Friends book sale
The Friends of the Wheaton Public Library are seeking donations of used books, CDs, DVDs, videos and audio books for the book sale planned Friday to Sunday at the library, 225 N. Cross St., Wheaton. Volunteer to clean Lincoln Marsh
The Lincoln Marsh Natural Area is holding a volunteer workday for all ages from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday on National Public Lands Day at the marsh in Wheaton. Those planning to attend are requested to call Terra Johnson at (630) 871-2180.
Plan for Day of Play in Glendale Heights
The Glendale Heights Parks and Recreation Department is planning a Worldwide Day of Play for families as a free event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Camera Park, Fullerton Avenue and President Street, Glendale Heights. For details, call (630) 260-6060.
Medicine show coming Sunday
The Grand and Mystical Kickapoo Medicine Show will entertain at 1:15, 2:15 and 3:15 p.m. Sunday at Stacy's Tavern Museum, 557 Geneva Road, Glen Ellyn. Tickets are $5 for adults, $2.50 for children 10 and younger. The event includes a pig roast with meal tickets available for $15 for adults, $2.50 for children 12 and younger.
All tickets are available at The Book Store, McChesney Miller and Stacy's Tavern in Glen Ellyn. Meals will be served from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Residents honored for landscapes
The village of Carol Stream has recognized its 2007 Community Pride recipients. The award winners for single-family residential landscape include Gregory Prochazka, 521 Iroquois Trail; the Ludwigs, 929 Kalamazoo Court; the Stewarts, 655 Blake Court; the Biernackis, 1400 Walnut Circle; and for single-family residential landscape and facade, the Williamses, 456 Natoma Circle.
