Discovery! art programs: The College of Lake County Discovery! program offers several programs for adults 50 and over with a love of art and culture:
Four Italian women painters who overcame burdens, barriers and scandals to achieve genius and recognition in their own day will be showcased in a four-week class Wednesday to Oct. 17.
"La Boheme" will be the subject of a lecture on Saturday for opera lovers and theater-goers alike. The musical theater team of Rodgers and Hart will be the subject of a four week multi-media class covering their work from the 1920s to 1940s. The course will be offered Oct. 4 to 25.
Hands-on classes in art and photography are also available through Discovery! Experimental Art for Everyone will explore various techniques and media to create mixed media pieces. Beginning Watercolor Painting and Watercolor Painting will teach painting fundamentals and technique at two different sites. Digital camera users will learn camera usage and photo technique in Dazzling Digital Photography: How to Use and Have Fun with a Digital Camera.

Las Guitarras de España: Las Guitarras de España (The Guitars of Spain), a world music ensemble with a Spanish guitar twist, will perform at 8 p.m. Friday. at the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts at the College of Lake County.
The ensemble performs a fusion of Cuban son (a relative to salsa music), rumba, R&B, Latin jazz, blues and African percussion with an underlying flamenco music and dance focus.
Tickets are $28 for the general public, with discounts available for CLC staff, seniors 65 and over and members of the CLC Alumni Association. CLC student tickets are $16 and children's tickets are $13. Price includes a $1 JLC restoration fee per ticket. Two film series: The College of Lake County will present a series of recent international films and a series of independent films. There is no charge for the films, which will be screened at 7 p.m. on Fridays in room A162 (unless noted otherwise) on the CLC Grayslake Campus.

• "Moolaadé" (2004) will be screened on Friday. Directed by African filmmaker and novelist Ousmane Sembene, "Moolaadé" deals with one woman's revolt against her village's cruel traditions in a manner that surprises, delights and inspires. This film is being co-sponsored by the CLC Women's Center.
• "Shutter" (2004) will be shown on Oct. 19 in the C Wing Auditorium (C005). "Shutter" falls within the tradition of recent Asian horror films while presenting an original spin on the imagery and themes of movies such as "Ringu" and "A Tale of Two Sisters."
• "Après Vous" (2003), screened on Nov. 2, is a comedy about death, love and French food. A Parisian waiter stops a man from committing suicide and then takes him under his wing, but matters become complicated when he attempts to repair his new friend's broken romance. This film is co-sponsored by the Communication Arts, Humanities and Fine Arts Division as part of French Week at CLC. Upcoming films in the CLC Independent Film Series include:
• "Cake: A Wedding Story" will be shown on Oct. 5. When two star-crossed lovers set on eloping are forced into having a big wedding, the bride develops a plan of her own. But the groom is not privy to the plan, and family and friends start to take sides at a reception for a wedding that never took place.
• "Riding Solo on Top of the World" will be presented on Nov. 16. Director Gaurav Jani covers thousands of miles on his motorcycle, from his home in Mumbai through the Changthang Plateau, one of the most remote places in the world. Along the way, he films his journey through the beautiful landscapes and the people he meets along the way, including the Buddhist Chang pas.
• "King Corn" will be shown on Dec. 7. The film concerns two recent college graduates who travel to their ancestral home in rural Iowa, plant a single acre of America's most powerful crop, corn, and attempt to follow its fate as food. In their year-long adventure they see the realities of modern farming first-hand, explore a fast-food nation built on corn syrup sodas and corn-fed meat and come to question government subsidies, intensive agriculture and cheap food.

Ceramics events: The College of Lake County ceramics club is sponsoring a workshop on Saturday and a lecture on Oct. 20 by two noted ceramic artists.
Sam Chung, an artist and ceramics professor from Arizona State University, will present a workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the CLC ceramics room, L035. The cost, including lunch, is $20.

A guest lecturer will discuss ceramics and East Asia from 2 to 3 p.m. Oct. 20.
Meghen Jones is a writer, curator and doctoral student in art history at Boston University, where she is pursuing a dissertation on Tomimoto Kenkichi, regarded by many as the most significant figure in the history of modern Japanese ceramics. Jones will discuss how ceramics became "modern art" in Japan and how they relate to the art ceramics of Kenkichi.

Fall Xplore classes: Middle school students can make Saturdays a day to explore new topics such as manicures, Web pages or fencing through the College of Lake County Xplore program.
A variety of Xplore classes will be offered Oct. 27, Nov. 10 and Dec. 1 at the Lake County High Schools Technology Campus in Grayslake.
Oct. 27 classes will include Babysitting Certification, Beginning PowerPoint, Beginning Internet Research, Beginning Photoshop, Spa Manicure Class, Fencing I, Archery and Test Taking Strategies.
Nov. 10 classes include Infant and Child CPR and First Aid, Intermediate PowerPoint, Intermediate Photoshop, Web Design: Beginning Dreamweaver and Personal Care and Make-Up Application.
Dec. 1 classes will be offered in Babysitting Certification, Web Design: Intermediate Dreamweaver, Hair Styling I, Graphic Design: Beginning Web Animation, Holiday Portrait Studio and Test Taking Strategies.
Xplore classes are offered in half-day sessions, mornings and afternoons.
The Lake County High Schools Technology Campus is in the northwest corner adjacent to the College of Lake County Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Washington St.
Special interest courses also are part of Xplore. The following horsemanship classes for kids ages 12 to 14 will be at Dawn Atlas Stables in Burlington, Wis.: Tacking Up and Horsing Around on Saturday and Help Horses Live Longer on Oct. 13.
Online classes are available in LEGO Engineering or Video Game Making for youth ages 8 to 17. For sports enthusiasts, late-starting Kids First Sports Safety programs are offered in baseball and soccer at the CLC Grayslake campus multipurpose field.

Discovery classes: Seniors living at The Village at Victory Lakes in Lindenhurst can visit the Village Center building's great room to explore a variety of topics offered by the College of Lake County Discovery Program. For the first time, the college will offer on-site Discovery classes for residents as well as for any adult age 50 or over. Victory Lakes is at 1075 Victory Drive, Lindenhurst.

The following CLC Discovery classes will be offered this fall at Victory Lakes:
• Comparative Religions (CDIS 76-301) will discuss the teachings, rituals, symbols and cultures of Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The course will be from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 29 to Nov. 17.
• Great Decisions Discussion Group (CDIS 13-301) will feature an exchange of opinions on world events, based on a selected topic from the Foreign Policy Association briefing booklet. The class will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 4 to Nov. 15.
• Beginning Watercolor Painting (CDIS 98-301) is geared to the beginning artist, but intermediate students are welcome. The class will meet Thursdays, Oct. 4 to Nov. 8.
• For Retirees (and Near-Retirees) Only: Making Your Money Last (CDIS 18-304) will meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 9. Learn how to maximize and stretch income during retirement and what research says about how much to withdraw and spend each year.
In addition, the Southlake Educational Center will offer several Discovery classes starting in October focusing on history and current events.
• A three-week series on Irish history and literature will be taught from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Irish history begins Oct. 3, The Irish Great Famine will be the topic on Oct. 10, and Literary Responses to Irish History will be the topic on Oct. 17. Each lecture has a $15 fee.
• Gary Midkiff will lead a class, "16 People Who Shaped Our Country" from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. starting Oct. 6. The class will focus on some of the lesser known individuals who made major contributions to the nation's development. The course fee is $45.
• Current Events Update will be offered from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 5. The class will provide an analysis of U.S. foreign policy initiatives and actions. The fee is $15.
• A Great Decisions Discussion Group is forming Monday afternoons starting Monday. This group will discuss contemporary world issues using a briefing booklet from the Foreign Policy Association. The booklet is included in the $55 course fee.

Children's shows: Parents and young audience members will be entertained by shows at the College of Lake County this fall organized by the Student Activities Program Board and performed by the Round Lake Park District.
"Cinderella's Glass Slipper," a musical version of the classic tale, will be performed at 2 and 4 p.m. Sunday.
"Once Upon a Wolf," in which the Big Bad Wolf decides he wants to be the good guy for a change and sets off on a mission to become a hero will be performed at 2 and 4 p.m. Nov. 4.
Entertainer Thaddeus Rex will perform at 2 p.m. on Dec. 2, with original songs and stories, comedy, acting, music and audience participation. Each audience member is invited to bring a new or gently-used book to donate in exchange for free admission. Without a book, tickets are $5 per person. The books will be donated to the Lake County Reach Out and Read program.
Performances will take place in the C005 Auditorium, in the lower level of the C Wing on the Grayslake campus. Tickets for all events are $5 and are available by calling the CLC Box Office at (847) 543-2300 or online at www.clcillinois.edu/tickets.
Apply to win knife set: Food service management students at the College of Lake County can apply for a free set of five chef knives, a $410 value, provided by Henckels, the well-known German knife maker.
To be eligible to receive a knife set, students must meet certain eligibility requirements including having been admitted as a CLC student or having a minimum 2.5 GPA from another college. Students should provide an official transcript from the last school they attended, be enrolled for at least 12 credit hours in the term for which they are applying for aid, have declared a major in Food Service Management and must pay tuition by the first day of class or have a college-approved alternative payment plan in place.

"The Little Prince": A stage version of the children's classic "The Little Prince" will be presented by the College of Lake County theater department in six daytime and evening performances, Oct. 3 to 7.
"The Little Prince" tells the story of a world-weary aviator whose malfunctioning plane strands him in the middle of the Sahara Desert. There, he meets an imaginative boy who claims to hail from an unknown star. The Little Prince delights the aviator with stories of his adventures and eventually teaches the aviator the secret of what is really important in life.
Daytime performances for school groups will begin at 10 a.m. Oct. 3, 4 and 5. School group tickets cost $4 each in advance. Performances also will begin at 3 and 7 p.m. Oct. 6 and 2 p.m. Oct. 7. Tickets cost $6. Prices include a $1 per ticket James Lumber Center restoration fee.

Seminars for entrepreneurs: Seminars in do-it-yourself Web design, buying and selling a business, global business opportunities and basic record keeping will be offered during October by the Illinois Small Business Development Center at the College of Lake County.
Seminars will be taught by industry professionals and are designed to quickly improve students' business knowledge and skills.
Fees for the following courses range from $35 to $70 and are held at the CLC Grayslake campus unless indicated:
• Do-It-Yourself Web Design (TBSM 24) will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 3. Kristie Tamsevicius, founder of WebMomz.com and president of Branding on the Net will teach how to create and launch a profitable Web site.
• How to Buy or Sell a Business (TBSM 41) will be offered from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 9. Learn how to evaluate opportunities, value a business, strategize, negotiate and gain desired results. The instructor is Andrew Sagartz, who founded CALMEC Global Law Group.
• Go Global: New Business Opportunities (TBSM 32) will be from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at the CLC Southlake Educational Center in Vernon Hills. This U.S. Department of Commerce workshop will offer tips on how to find markets, finance transactions, locate partners and identify opportunities with the U.S. government.
• Basic Record Keeping for Small Business (TBSM 6) will meet from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 16 and 23. The class will be taught by Leonard Dam, principal of Dam Snell and Taveirne, Ltd.
These programs are partially funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and CLC as a service to small businesses.

This workshop is offered by the Internal Revenue Service in partnership with the Illinois Small Business Development Center at the College of Lake County.

Star Wars/Trek fan expert: The College of Lake County will sponsoring a lecture by Dan Madsen, a publisher and expert on Star Wars and Star Trek fans, from noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 4 in the C Wing Auditorium (C005) at the College of Lake County.
Madsen will speak about the future of Star Trek and Star Wars, how to keep positive despite adversities, and the documentary "The Force Among Us," which presents a positive look at Star Wars fans and features interviews with CLC sociology professor and Star Wars and Star Trek expert John Tenuto and CLC students. Madsen will also discuss issues of tolerance and the feature film "Short Story," which is loosely based on his life as a little person.
Madsen will be joined by Cris and Cortney Macht, the writers, producers and directors of "The Force Among Us," which was partially filmed at CLC.

The class discusses sociological theory; the subculture of Star Wars fans; and social themes of Star Wars, especially religion and the cultural influence of Star Wars.
CLC Sports Banquet: Joe Newton will deliver the keynote address at the College of Lake County Foundation's 19th Keith Ryan Scholarship Fund and Sports Banquet at Midlane Country Club in Wadsworth on Oct. 4. The program will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person or $360 for a table of eight. The banquet will recognize inductees into the Lake County High Schools Sports Hall of Fame and the Waukegan (Little Fort) Lions Club Sports Hall of Fame for 2007.
Newton is a legendary high school track and cross country coach at York High School in Elmhurst, where his teams have won a total of 2,014 dual meets with a 98 percent winning mark. Newton's teams have won 272 conference championships, including 23 cross country titles in a row from 1978-2000. His cross country teams have lost only three home meets in 46 years (150-3), and he has coached 228 All-Staters. He has written four books, including "The Long Green Line," "Motivation: The Name of the Game," "Running to the Top of the Mountain" and "Coaching Cross Country Successfully."
The banquet is being held in memory of the late Keith Ryan, a popular sportscaster who spent nearly a quarter century promoting local sports in Lake County. Proceeds will be applied toward two $1,000 scholarships for CLC students -- one for a student pursuing a career in print or broadcast communications and the other for a sophomore student athlete.

CLC Foundation Gala: Chuck and Teresa Bartels of Mundelein will be honored at the College of Lake County Foundation annual Scholarship Gala, "Out of This World," on Oct. 27.
The evening will begin with a reception and silent auction at 6:30 p.m., followed by a gourmet dinner featuring food from around the world, a live auction and entertainment by The Orchestra 33. The CLC Foundation awards more than $500,000 in scholarships annually to CLC students, with the traditional fall Gala providing a large share of that funding.
Raffle tickets are now on sale for $25 each or five for $100. The raffle is a 50/50 cash raffle, with only 1,000 tickets being sold.

Teresa Bartels is president and chief executive officer of United Way International. She was the founding chair of the University Center of Lake County, directed a fund-raising effort for the campaign to keep recruit training at Great Lakes Naval Station in 1993 and has been active in the Girl Scouts, YWCA, A Safe Place, Northern Illinois Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse and LaCasa, a rape crisis and child safety agency.
Chuck Bartels operated a Manpower franchise in Lake and McHenry counties until 2000. He then joined Manpower's Global Corporate Strategy team and helped develop Manpower's CoOperative Global Network Intelligence System. In 2006, he became the company's director of global social responsibility. He is a past member of the CLC Foundation board of directors and served as its president from 1997-1999.
College expo: The Illinois College Exposition, hosted by the College of Lake County from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 18, is a place for families to begin the college search process. The expo will be in the Physical Education Center, Building 7, on the CLC Grayslake campus. Parking is available in lots 2 or 3, on the north side of the CLC campus, closest to the Washington Street and Lancer Lane entrance.
Two sessions on financial aid will be in room 706 of the Physical Education Center. The 6:45 p.m. session will be given in English, and the 7:15 p.m. session will be conducted in Spanish.
The event is being sponsored by the Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling and is intended for high school juniors and seniors and their parents. Representatives from colleges and universities in Illinois and across the United States will provide information about admission to their institutions. The armed forces also will be represented.

Learn about green roofs: A green roof seminar designed for building managers, architects, landscape architects, environmental program staff, teachers and public planners will be offered by the College of Lake County from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 19 featuring green roof expert David Yocca. The course fee is $25.
This seminar and tour, which will begin and end at CLC's Southlake Educational Center in Vernon Hills, will provide an introduction to green roof technology, describe benefits and ecological services, including storm water retention and energy reduction and provide resources for component and plant material research.
After the presentation, participants will see Southlake's newly planted green roof areas at the Southlake Educational Center, then board a bus to the Skokie Public Library to view a mature green roof system of the same type. Bus transportation will return participants to the CLC Southlake Educational Center.
