Barrington holds off Prospect
Mount Prospect Golf Club was the proving ground Monday for the Mid-Suburban League girls golf meet.
It proved that the MSL is just getting tougher.
Barrington held on for its fourth straight MSL title, shooting 339 to edge host Prospect's 341.
The teams had also finished 1-2 in the final dual-meet standings.
"It's always a nail-biter," said Barrington coach Jodi Schoeck. "This conference has come so far. Every team has come so far in the last 15 years. Every coach and every team needs to be commended on they way they play now. It's a tough conference."
Conant sophomore Kris Yoo captured MSL medalist honors with a 76.
"The greens were fast but the course played good," Yoo said. "I had 3 birdies, so those were all good. I was really nervous in the beginning. But then I got over it and played my game."
Marina Karamanis led the Fillies with a 79 to take second in the final individual standings.
"It was good," said Karamanis, whose round was 2 shots off her personal best. "Today was a good day. I was lucky to get on the green in reg(ulation). My putting could've been better, but it was all right. My last few tournaments I've shot an 83, so today I came in wanting to do my best."
Karamanis shaved 22 strokes from her round in last year's MSL meet.
"That was clutch," said Schoeck of Karamanis. "This is just her second year of playing golf. She's completely turned a corner. I was just waiting for it to happen in the next week or so, but it happened today. Nobody is more deserving. She's worked so hard on her game."
Third-place finisher McCall Barsamian (82), Brittany Keiter (89) and Amanda Schmitz (89) all contributed for Barrington.
"I have to give all the love to this team," Schoeck said. "They have played hard together. Good for them, but this is no time to stop now."
Leading the Knights was Michelle Lawless, who finished fourth with an 83.
"We can always depend on each other," said Prospect coach Jim Hamann. "We have a lot of depth. Lawless led us today for the first time. She did a great job. We're very excited to see how she played."
"It went pretty good," said Lawless. "We have a deep team. We push each other. The pressure is not on one person."
Completing the Knights' scoring were fifth-place Melanie Walsh (84), Marietta Smith (86) and Megan Geraghty (88).
"I'm not going to lie, losing by 2 strokes is a tough one to swallow," Hamann said. "To lose to Barrington is nothing to hang your head about. They're a good team. We're going to focus on the regional and maybe we'll see them again downstate."
Fremd (371) finished third in the MSL meet, followed by Rolling Meadows co-op (379), Hersey (388) and Conant (392).
Factoring in the dual-meet results from the regular season, the Vikings, Mustangs, Huskies and Cougars finished in a four-way tie for third.
"It is very nice (to finish tied for third)," said Conant coach Diana Johannesen. "It's nice what Kris did. She was third last year. I'm very proud and our school is very proud. It was awesome how well Prospect ran the tournament. Everything was done very nicely."
Kelly Voigt (85) and Claudia Schwan (86) led Fremd.
"We came back strong today," said Vikings coach Rob Higgins. "We finally got two solid scores. It's exciting. I'd say they shot close to their potential."
Melissa Greenwood (91), Mia Kaim (92) and Shannon Leon (95) helped drive the Mustangs.
"I'm pleased with the outcome," said Meadows coach Dan Rymarz. "The Mustangs made up some ground today and it was a good meet for them."
The Huskies were led by Kristen Gierman (91), Megan Rogowski (94) and Catherine Park (98).
"I'm so proud of them all, they did a nice job," said Hersey coach Sue Hardey.
Amy Voijta shot a 91 to lead seventh-place Palatine (399). Shannon Eliasek (100) and Kelli Burke (101) also played well for the Pirates.
"I thought they did a little bit better than what I expected," said Palatine coach Bill Ludwigsen. "I think we improved throughout the whole year, which was one of our goals and objectives."
Katie Wilson (104) and Hilary Dietz (105) led Schaumburg (427). Hoffman Estates (428) got solid play from Tiffany Ehardt (97) and Alaine Coleman (103).
KC Dunne and Debbie Ghim shot 103s for Buffalo Grove (441). Ashley Lepcin carded a 95 for Wheeling (450), while teammate Kim Star added a 103.
