Groups plan fundraisers to help woman

The heart-rending diagnosis for 20-year-old Zuleica Arano Estrada of Hanover Park is hidden in the letters ESRD, but translated to end-stage renal disease.

The letters bring fear to Estrada and those who know and love her.

On her behalf, Sister Marianne Supan from the Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit in Schaumburg wants area folks to know of Estrada's plight and forthcoming kidney transplant. The young woman has had kidney dialysis since 2000.

"Zuleica has no insurance and cannot move forward with the transplant until she raises $150,000," Sister Supan said. "Hospital procedure dictates that funds be available for after care and medications."

Both Holy Spirit and St. Hubert sponsor Jewel Shop and Share Days, with 5 percent of purchases donated to Estrada's cause. Supan asks that folks shop today through Wednesday and use the identification slips that may be obtained from either church.

Another way to help is to donate directly to the Zuleica Arano Estrada Fund, account number 4800394465, at Harris Bank Streamwood, 185 W. Irving Park Road, Streamwood, IL 60107.

Hair stylist Howard Poulin will donate 100 percent of his proceeds for hair cuts today and Oct. 1 to help raise funds for the young woman. He offers a $35 hair cut and style at his shop, the Howard Poulin Studio Salon, 235 W. Golf Road, Hoffman Estates. Call (847) 490-3535 for an appointment.

"Skate to the Finish Line," another effort, will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday in MainStreet USA, a roller rink in Streamwood. The $10 ticket includes admission, roller skates, and a donation to the Estrada fund.
