Dist. 156 will vote on gym settlement

McHenry High School District 156 has reached a settlement with contractors who installed a faulty gymnasium floor at the McHenry West campus.

The district expects to recoup $390,000 for repair work on the floor and legal fees, said Darrell Moon, the district's chief financial officer.

The floor was part of $48.5 million in renovations at both high school campuses completed four years ago. Spider cracks appeared shortly after the floor was installed, leading to saw cuts and the surface bubbling up.

The district hired experts to perform tests on the floor, which uncovered several problems with the installation and the quality of workmanship in the concrete.

"Two years later, after getting no response from the participants, we went ahead and had it repaired ourselves," Moon said.

The reason it took so long to reach an agreement was because the contractors couldn't agree who was at fault, Moon said.

The school board is expected to vote on the settlement at its Oct. 2 meeting.

"We are not anticipating a problem," Moon said.
