Briefs: Black business expo set
The Elgin-based Black Business Owners and Community Networking Organization will hold a business and entrepreneur empowerment expo from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday in the Fox Valley Business Center at Elgin Community College. So far, roughly 30 vendors are participating and speakers will be on hand to discuss starting, expanding and financing new businesses. MCC concert series to start
McHenry Community College's Second Sunday Concert Series starts at 3 p.m. Oct. 14 with a performance by the Old Dominion Brass Quintet. The concert, "From Rags to Riches," will feature arrangements of music from Broadway, Mozart and Sinatra. The free concert will be at the MCC Conference Center, 8900 Route 14, Crystal Lake. This season's concert lineup includes jazz and folk musicians and Handel's "Messiah." A reception will be held after each performance. Call (815) 479-7670.
Elgin hosts 'Day of Play'
The Elgin parks and recreation department will host A Day of Play from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 29, with giveaways, a relay contest, a rally ball tennis demonstration and plenty of information on keeping kids healthy and fit. The contests are mainly for kids in grade school and middle school. The event is part of The World Wide Day of Play, an initiative by the Illinois Association of Park Districts and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. In Elgin, the event is free for the public, and scheduled to take place at both Lords Park and Wing Park.
