Crystal Lake beating victim dies, upgraded charges possible
Upgraded charges are possible after a Crystal Lake man seriously injured last week in what police call an unprovoked attack died over the weekend.
Anthony Carlsen, 45, of Crystal Lake was pronounced dead Sunday at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, one week after he was admitted for head injuries suffered when he was knocked to the ground outside a city tavern.
The man accused of beating him, Dustin Goy of Crystal Lake, initially was charged with aggravated battery and went free last week after posting a $5,000 bond.
But with Carlsen's death, McHenry County prosecutors may upgrade charges.
"We're still waiting for some supplemental reports and information that is forthcoming before making a final decision," First Assistant McHenry County State's Attorney Thomas Carroll said Monday.
There was no immediate move by prosecutors Monday to increase or revoke Goy's bond.
His attorney, Todd Cohen, said Goy is aware that prosecutors could upgrade the charge against him.
"He is innocent until proven guilty," Cohen said.
Carlsen was injured about 1:30 a.m. Sunday outside The Cottage Tavern, 6 E. Crystal Lake Ave.
"The victim was battered by Mr. Goy, and the information we had at the time was that it was an unprovoked attack," Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Dennis Harris said Monday. "Obviously, it's a significant situation, and we're investigating it with all our resources."
Although both men are believed to have been at the bar before the incident, there is no indication of a fight inside that spilled outside, Harris said.
