Break barriers at meeting
Space is still available at the human relations conference "Building Relationships for Today and Tomorrow," to be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at Woodfield Hyatt Hotel, 1800 E. Golf Road in Schaumburg. The public is invited to the daylong event aimed at breaking down cultural barriers in the Northwest suburbs. Sponsors include the Illinois Commission on Diversity and Human Relations, the city of Elgin, the village of Streamwood, Sisters of the Living Word in Arlington Heights and Evanston-based Clark Consulting Group. Students learn road safety:
Streamwood police will present Saturn Day 2007 to Streamwood High School driver education students at Saturn of Schaumburg, 125 W. Higgins Road today. The event will feature live demonstrations of "fatal vision" goggles, child safety seat safety and an air bag deployment. Participants include Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists, Delnor-Community Hospital, Kane County medical examiner's office and Streamwood, Hoffman Estates, Chicago and Illinois state police.
Fremd marches to 1st
The Fremd High School marching band took home first Saturday at a competition in Naperville. The Vikings won the AA division at the Naperville Central High School Marching Classic. Seventeen schools competed in four divisions. Fremd took 8th place overall.
Fire grant for Des Plaines
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded the Des Plaines Fire Department $79,200 for operations and safety as part of $10.6 million in Assistance to Firefighters Grants given out. The grants enable local fire departments and emergency medical services organizations to purchase or receive training, conduct first responder health and safety programs, and buy equipment and response vehicles.
Hoffman senior event
Hoffman Estates seniors are invited to Feel Good Day Wednesday. For a $3 admission, seniors will be treated a variety of seminars, including how to prepare healthy meals, a Mary Kay cosmetic consultation, manicures and a free 911 cell phone from the Cook County sheriff. The event, sponsored by The Devonshire of Hoffman Estates and hosted the Hoffman Estates Commission for Senior Citizens, runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Hoffman Estates Park District Community Center and Ice Arena, 1685 W.
