Mustangs edge Bears on court

Mundelein's doubles made the difference Thursday.

The Mustangs' girls tennis team edged Lake Zurich 3-2 in North Suburban Lake Division action, winning two of the three doubles matches.

Mundelein's No. 1 team of Karlie Alms/Paige Parola won 6-3, 7-6 (5) and the No. 2 duo of Mandy Ranck/Karolina Kucybala claimed a 6-3, 6-0 decision.

The Mustangs also won first singles thanks to Hanne MacDonald.

Lake Zurich (5-2, 1-1) got wins from Margaret Boden (No. 2 singles) and Val Wilson/Gina Maliekal (No. 3 doubles).

Lakes 4, Grant 1: The Eagles received straight-set wins from Jen Shea (No. 1 singles), Taylor Pooley (No. 2 singles), Nicole Tiffany/Alyssa Wittman (No. 2 doubles) and Jessica David/Maria Karstedt (No. 3 doubles).

Grant won first doubles with the team of Mary Roath/Emily Winograd, who prevailed in three sets.

Carmel 4, Joliet Catholic 1: Lauren Aguilar lost at No. 1 singles, but the Corsairs won the rest of the matches in the East Suburban Catholic Conference match.

Carmel's winners were Michelle Kunkler (No. 2 singles), Kristina Eilers/Jen Lee (No. 1 doubles), Katie Tarpey/Meredith George (No. 2 doubles) and Christina Zizzo/Stephanie Rydel (No. 3 doubles).

Boys cross country

Lakes d. Grayslake North: Grayslake North's Nick Lane cruised to the finish line, as his winning time of 16:27 was more than a minute faster than runner-up Ethan Hahn of Lakes.

Lakes won the meet, edging the Knights 27-28.

Boys soccer

Oak Park 4, Libertyville 1: In a consolation-bracket game of the Pepsi Showdown, Oak Park jumped out to a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Kyle Gustafson scored the lone Libertyville goal on a penalty kick.

Libertyville (4-2) will next play Saturday at 10:10 a.m. against Providence at Lyons.

Lake Zurich 2, Buffalo Grove 0: Eric Pothast and Andy Lynch scored for the Bears in a consolation-bracket game of the Pepsi Showdown. Keeper Taao Scarnato had 4 saves in earning his fourth shutout.

Lake Zurich (6-3-2) next plays Saturday at 8 a.m. against Lane Tech at Lyons.

Boys golf

Lakes d. Antioch: At Antioch Golf Course, the Eagles improved to 5-0 in the North Suburban Prairie Division, as they shot a 178 to defeat the Sequoits (185).

Antioch's Chris Burton was medalist with a 41.

Lakes received 42s from Jon Schultz and Craig Franke.

McHenry d. Grayslake C.:ŒAt McHenry Country Club, Grayslake Central (164) was edged by the host Warriors (161), despite 39s from Kyle Reckling and James Hahn.

Girls golf

Carmel d. Fenwick: At Countryside, the Corsairs carded a 169 on the Traditional Course's back nine to post a five-stroke victory.

Stephanie Zdon of Carmel was medalist with a 40.

Women's soccer

Lake County 6, Oakton 1: Sharon Kallner scored 3 goals and center defender Ingrid Johnson had 2 goals and 2 assists.

Ally Yarc also scored for College of Lake County (6-2, 3-1 Skyway Conference).
