Opposition is to Bush, not the war

Opposition is to Bush, not the war

Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Sudan Darfur, what do these places have in common?

1. The military operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo was one of the few things that President Clinton did that I approved of, when many of my compatriots on the right, did not support it.

2. I believe that if Al Gore had been president and had invaded Iraq, many of the people who opposed the war from its beginning would be supporting it. These people oppose the war because they hate President Bush. The exception is the far left, who oppose the war because they hate America.

3. I have noticed that many of the people who oppose the Iraq war, turn around and demand that the president act to stop the genocide in Sudan-Darfur.

As early as 2000, I figured out the only thing that will stop the Khartoum-Hitlerite regime is a full invasion. The U.S. would provide the air cover, while Ethiopia. Kenya and Uganda would support the ground forces. They would capture Khartoum and partition the country. The African-Christian southern part of Sudan would become independent.

4. If President Gore had invaded the Sudan, most of the left would support it to the hilt. You could imagine Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon doing a USO show.

5. If President Bush had invaded the Sudan instead of Iraq, the people protesting the Iraq war would be protesting the Sudan war. They would be shouting some lame slogans like "No blood for oil." They'd make the same asinine calls for impeachment.

The bottom line is, the anti-war movement of today is as bogus and phony as the anti-war movement of the 1960s.

Outdoor fireplaces should be banned

My neighbors and I were recently assaulted by smoke coming from another neighbor's outside wood-burning fireplace. We had to go into the house, but it was too late. The smell and smoke was already inside! Why should we have to leave our backyard deck and close our doors and windows (which did not help!) because someone wants to burn wood or whatever? I believe the smoke is very bad for everyone, and especially those with medical conditions, like asthma. Let's not allow anyone to pollute the air and property of others. Ban those outside wood-burning fireplaces.

Surely, signs do not mean what they say

A quick note to the residents along Euclid Avenue in Arlington Heights. Either you are trying to mislead people or you just don't know how to spell. Support The Troops / End The War should read Support The Troops / Win The War. I'm sure you didn't mean End The War because, after all, if we leave before we've won and, therefore lose, that means the terrorists won.

Perspective needed on power outage

I was rather shocked to read about the people who were berating ComEd and even filing class-action lawsuits against it for its response to the violent storm that hit our area on Aug. 23.

I feel that we should be grateful to all those people who worked so hard to restore it. We lost our power for 72 hours, and while it was not a pleasant experience, we would surely not place blame upon the people who were working around the clock to correct the situation.

We, like countless others in our neighborhood, purchased a generator after 40 hours of having our battery operated backup sump pumps running constantly. People who have health-related problems because of a power failure could surely have found someplace to go temporarily for assistance.

Sometimes we have to realize that the general good far exceeds the right of each individual. Hospitals, traffic signals, and stores carrying perishable goods are far more important than our private refrigerators, stoves, TVs, computers and lights.

Perhaps we should lighten up a bit. Not too many generations ago people lived without electricity and managed to survive. Surely we can make it through a few days.
