Briefs: Meet 'Hotel Rwanda' hero

Paul Rusesabagina, the real-life hero portrayed in the movie "Hotel Rwanda" will appear as part of "Horror to Hope: An Evening with Paul Rusesabagina" at 7 p.m,. Sunday at Wyndemere Auditorium, Manchester and County Farm roads, Wheaton. The event is free and open to the community as a benefit for L'Ecole Rwanda: A School of Hope as a project of All Souls' Anglican Church in Wheaton to build a school in Rwanda. No injuries in Glen Ellyn fire

A fire in a first-floor apartment bedroom at 554 Pershing Ave. caused about $35,000 damage, Glen Ellyn fire Chief Scott Rafensparger said Friday. Rafensparger said no one was home at the time of the Thursday fire and the cause is unknown. "It was a pretty routine bedroom fire and we had it knocked down in five minutes," he said.

Group seeks aides

South East Association for Special Parks and Recreation is accepting applications for program assistants and inclusion aides to provide support to children and adults with disabilities. Wheaton seeks burglar

Wheaton police are seeking information about a foiled home burglary that occurred Thursday afternoon. Police believe an unknown burglar entered a home in the 100 block of East Hawthorne Boulevard at 10:30 a.m. The homeowner returned while the burglar was inside the house, causing the intruder to flee northbound on foot. No one was injured. police could not locate the burglar after searching the area. The suspect is described as a 30- to 35-year-old man with short, black hair. He stands 6 feet tall and weighs about 190 pounds. He wore a black T-shirt, blue jeans and cloth gloves at the time of the burglary. Man beaten in Naperville

A Romeoville man was punched in the face and knocked unconscious during a fight in downtown Naperville last week. Igor A. Chernysh, 24, of Chicago, was charged with two counts of battery following the early morning Aug. 31 fight at Chicago Avenue and Washington Street, police said. Police said the fight erupted after Chernysh overheard the victim making fun of Chernysh posing with a United Way charity sculpture. The victim's sister took a picture of Chernysh posing with the sculpture, which aided in his apprehension, police said. Chernysh, who was arrested a few blocks from the scene of the fight, eventually paid a $100 bond and was released later that day. The unidentified victim was transported to Edward Hospital where he was treated and released, police said.
