Briefs: Jail time for painkiller theft
A former paramedic was sentenced to 60 days in jail Thursday after admitting he stole morphine from numerous ambulances. DuPage County Judge Perry Thompson also ordered Daniel Karczewski, 43, of Morris to serve 48 days of probation and undergo counseling. Karczewski pleaded guilty to burglary and official misconduct. He was arrested in September 2006 after being discovered taking morphine bottles from an ambulance in Lockport. Authorities said Karczewski also pilfered morphine from ambulances in Glen Ellyn, Downers Grove, Lombard, Westmont, Lockport and Glendale Heights and replaced the drug with water.
Laughs at St. Francis
Improv comedy comes to Wheaton's St. Francis High School this weekend when the audience-driven competition "ComedySportz" hits the stage. The interactive performance begins at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Kuhn Cultural Arts Center. Tickets are $35 and include hors d'oeuvres and beverages following the performance. Print-a-thon in Aurora
The KlaasKids Print-a-Thon, to promote and educate families about child safety, will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at HSBC Credit Center, 1236 N. Lake St., Aurora. The free event is sponsored by the center and the nonprofit KlaasKids Foundation. Families will receive a packet of child safety tools, including digitized fingerprints, a DNA collection kit, proactive child safety tips and a nine-point plan on what to do if a child disappears. Experts will be on hand answer questions about safety and do fingerprinting and photographing.
Broadway at Cantigny
Mezzo soprano Tracy Watson will join the DuPage Symphony Orchestra this weekend to celebrate the early days of Broadway. The music of George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and Leonard Bernstein will highlight the evening. The performance is at 7 p.m. Saturday at Cantigny Park near Wheaton. Special needs fest coming
The Western DuPage Special Recreation Association will sponsor a family festival in Wheaton's Memorial Park on Sunday. Games, music, magic and food will be available. The association also will present awards to community members and businesses that have been supportive of its mission. The festival runs from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Park, 208 W. Union St.
Passport Fair in Glen Ellyn
The Glen Ellyn post office will offer a passport fair with extended hours from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 757 DuPage Blvd. Those applying for a passport should bring proof of American citizenship, proof of identity and two recent identical photographs and plan on paying the fee by personal check only. Video offers tips
Aurora residents can tune into a 20-minute video, produced by Aurora Community Television and Aurora police, educating residents on how to avoid being victimized by a burglar. The video features interviews with police who discuss new initiatives implemented department-wide to decrease home burglaries. It also provides tips.
