Mustangs shut out Knights

The Grayslake North boys soccer team figured to lose sometime.

That sometime was Wednesday night at Mundelein.

David Burdick scored twice to lead the Mustangs to a 3-0 nonconference win.

Mundelein, which did all its scoring in the second half, improved to 1-1-2. Grayslake North fell to 6-1.

Nestor Montiel had the Mustangs' other goal. Eric Flores, Manny Olmos and Kris Gustafson had assists. Eric Sorby made 4 saves in goal to earn the shutout for Mundelein.

Carmel 3, Niles North 2: Edwin Lagunas had 2 goals and an assist for the Corsairs in the nonconference match.

Kurt Houghton also scored, while John Zeffery contributed an assist. Carmel improved to 3-2-1.

Girls volleyball

Libertyville d. Glenbrook N.: Erin DeMarco dished 19 assists on 54-of-54 setting, as the Wildcats won 25-13, 25-22 to improve to 2-1.

Leigha Bystol and Emma Mach had 6 and 5 kills, respectively, for Libertyville. Other contributors included Lexie Gibbons (4 kills); Amber Bryant (2 kills); Jenny Caren (12 of 13 serve-receive); Ali Haws (3 kills, 2 aces); Emma Melendez (16-of-16 passing); and Maka Stewart (3 kills).

"We really came out strong tonight," Wildcats coach Chris Trzyna said. "It was a great team effort. Erin DeMarco did a great job of running a balanced attack."

Lake Zurich d. Glenbrook S.: The Bears rallied for a 15-25, 25-18, 25-23 nonconference win.

Lake Zurich (5-3) received 6 kills apiece from Lydia Bauer, Jen Grunden and Amber Miehlke. Lisa Butzen and Crystal Wright each had 5 kills.

Melissa Miehlke served 3 aces, while Amber Miehlke and Wright delivered two apiece. Monica Kloep and Bauer had 14 and 13 assists, respectively.

Jacobs d. Lakes: The Golden Eagles prevailed 25-14, 25-17 over the Eagles.

Keshia Cunningham had 3 kills and 4 blocks for Lakes. Kathy Szczesniak and Kelly Bol each served 2 aces. Steffanie Fisher and Mandy Fischer had 6 blocks apiece for the Eagles.

Girls golf

Carmel d. Lake Zurich: At Countryside Golf Club, Katie Kelly carded a 38 to lead the Corsairs to a winning 172.

Carmel also received a 41 from Jacqueline Jaskowiak and a 43 from Shannon Howell.

Lake Zurich (204) was led by Amanda Wright's 48.

Libertyville d. Mundelein: At Countryside Golf Club, the Wildcats' 201 edged the Mustangs by four strokes.

Libertyville's Alex Hein was medalist with a 39, as the Wildcats improved to 3-1.

Lauren Pierpont had a 45 for Mundelein.

Warren d. Lakes: The Blue Devils prevailed on a fifth-score tiebreaker, after each team carded a 198.

Lakes' Sarah Metzger had a birdie. She and Morgan Robinson both carded a personal-best 50.

Girls tennis

Grayslake N. d. Zion-Benton: The Knights won their first match ever, 4-3, receiving doubles victories from Bridget Clarke/Kassie Nettleton (No. 1), Mindy Runge/Amanda Stanley (No. 2) and Jen Marks/Kelly Hoepner (No. 3).

Women's soccer

Lake County 5, Waubonsee 4: Sharon Kallner had 3 goals and an assist, and Ally Yarc tallied 2 goals and 2 assists for the College of Lake County.

The Lancers improved to 3-2 and 1-1 in the Skyway Conference.

Men's golf

Skyway Conference meet: At Shepherd's Crook, the College of Lake County carded a 310 to finish first among six schools and 10 strokes better than runner-up Elgin.

The Lancers' Kevin Shimer and Troy Beyer both fired a 76 to tie for medalist honors.
