Briefs: Kane's 2nd West Nile case

A second human case of West Nile virus has been reported in Kane County. A 29-year-old man from Geneva became ill in early July. The county's first case in 2007 was a 46-year-old Elburn woman. West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird. Illness from West Nile includes fever, headache and body aches, but serious illness -- such as encephalitis and meningitis -- and death are possible. People older than 50 have the highest risk of severe disease. The culex mosquitoes that carry the virus breed in warm stagnant water, such as that in gutters, bird baths, garden pot drainage saucers and wading pools.
